Neutron diffraction at a moving grating as a nonstationary quantum phenomenon

Abstract

The observation of the discrete energy spectrum in a new experiment on the diffraction of ultracold neutrons at a moving phase grating is reported. The results are in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions and can be treated as additional evidence of the validity of the plane-wave representation of the initial neutron state.

Observation of a motion-induced phase shift of neutron de Broglie waves passing through matter near a nuclear resonance

M. Arif, Helmut Kaiser, R. Clothier +4 more

We report the results of a neutron interferometry experiment where for the first time (to our knowledge) a phase shift of a neutron de Broglie wave induced by moving matter has been successfully measured. This experiment is the quantum-mechanical analog of the optical Fizeau effect. The observed phase shift is caused by the motion of matter itself, and not by the motion of its boundaries. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Some unexpected and previously unreported neutron wave interference effects observed during the experiment are also reported.

A New Approach of Quantum Mechanics for Neutron Single-Slit Diffraction

Xiang-Yao Wu, Yang Jing-hai, Xiao-Jing Liu +4 more

Phenomena of electron, neutron, atomic and molecular diffraction have been studied in many experiments, and these experiments are explained by many theoretical works. We study neutron single-slit diffraction with a quantum mechanical approach. It is found that the obvious diffraction patterns can be obtained when the single-slit width a is in the range of 3λ~60λ. We also find a new quantum effect of the thickness of single-slit which can make a large impact on the diffraction pattern. The new quantum effect predicted in our work can be tested by the neutron single-slit diffraction experiment.

Single- and double-slit diffraction of neutrons

Anton Zeilinger, R. Gähler, C. G. Shull +2 more

The authors report detailed experiments and comparison with first-principle theoretical calculation of the diffraction of cold neutrons ($\ensuremath{\lambda}\ensuremath{\approx}2$ nm) at single- and double-slit assemblies of dimensions in the 20-100 \ensuremath{\mu}m range. Their experimental results show all predicted features of the diffraction patterns in great detail. Particularly, their double-slit diffraction experiment is its most precise realization hitherto for matter waves.
