Response of multipass schemes to radiation with complex frequency

Abstract

The response of multipass schemes, such as a layer of a medium and multiple-beam interferometer to a radiation pulse with an exponential intensity variation, which is equivalent to the complex frequency of the radiation, is analyzed. Stability conditions of the stationary regime of the scheme are determined.

Complex resonance and complex-frequency spectroscopy

N. N. Rosanov

The response of a medium to radiation with a complex frequency corresponding to an exponential time decrease in the radiation amplitude has been analyzed. The effect of complex resonance has been demonstrated when the real and imaginary parts of the complex radiation frequency approach the real and imaginary parts of the complex frequency of damping natural oscillations of medium oscillators. In resonance itself, the absolute value of the refractive index is divergent and radiation is completely reflected from the medium boundary. It has been shown that scanning of not only the real part, but also the imaginary part of the probe radiation frequency expands the capabilities of spectroscopy and makes it possible to, e.g., distinguish resonances even with coinciding (real) frequencies and close (of the same order of magnitude) widths.

Nonlinear polarization response of a gaseous medium in the regime of atom stabilization in a strong radiation field

Ekaterina A. Volkova, A. M. Popov, Olga V. Tikhonova

The nonlinear polarization response of a quantum system modeling a silver atom in the field of high-intensity radiation in the IR and UV spectral ranges has been studied by direct numerical integration of a nonstationary Schrödinger equation. The domains of applicability of perturbation theory and polarization expansion in powers of the field intensity are determined. The contribution of excited atoms and electrons in a continuum to the atomic polarization response at the field frequency, which arises due to the radiation-induced excitation and photoionization processes, is analyzed. Features of the nonlinear response to an external field under conditions of atom stabilization are considered.

Unstable gain regime of the transient two-frequency interaction of radiation with the inhomogeneously broadened quantum transitions

Oleg M. Parshkov, Alexey E. Dmitriev, Andrey L. Vershinin

The problem of stationary-gained modes formation under conditions of transient double resonance inspired by 2(pi) -pulse of pump and low-intensity signal radiation is investigated. One demonstrates the possibility of different shapes stationary-gained signal pulse formation and investigates the conditions of their arising and stability. The effect of inhomogeneous broadening of spectral transition lines on the mode formation is studied too.

Influence of the scattering matrix elements on the gain of Stokes and anti-Stokes components in the nonstationary regime

I. A. Kulagin, Timurbek Usmanov

The influence of the scattering matrix elements that are responsible for the amplification of the Stokes and anti-Stokes components on the process of stimulated Raman scattering in the essentially nonstationary regime is analyzed. It is demonstrated that the optimum proportion between the scattering matrix elements, which maximizes the anti-Stokes component, is determined by the ratio between the optical frequencies of the components and the initial proportion between the intensities of the pump and initiating pulses. In the case of the optimum proportion between the scattering matrix elements, the variation in the excitation of a medium compensates the self-induced modulation of gain, and the efficiency of converting the radiation energy into the Stokes and anti-Stokes components increases substantially.
