Resonant self-diffraction from dynamic, laser-induced gratings in II-VI compounds

Abstract

Dynamic laser-induced gratings (LIG) are investigated in CdS and ZnO. The microscopic processes resulting in the formation of LIG are discussed. A nonlinear coupling is found between oscillators active in the polarizations\overrightarrow{E} \perp \overrightarrow{c}and\overrightarrow{E} \parallel \overrightarrow{c}, respectively. The influence of induced absorption optical bistability on the temporal evolution of LIG is observed and qualitatively discussed.

Analysis of Laser-Induced Grating (LIG) Self-Diffraction in an Induced Absorbing Medium

C. Weber, R. Renner, Claus F. Klingshirn

In the present contribution we investigate the dynamics of a system showing the nonlinearity of photoinduced absorption under LIG [1] excitation. The experimental realisation is obtained in CdS where plasma induced effects lead to a red shift of absorption and to optical bistability [2].

ANALYSIS OF LASER-INDUCED GRATING (LIG) SELF-DIFFRACTION IN AN INDUCED ABSORBING MEDIUM

We investigate the dynamics of Laser-Induced Gratings (LIG) in a medium showing optical bistability due to increasing absorption (e.g. CdS). Fast switching processes occur in selfdiffraction both in the diffracted and transmitted beams.

Self-diffraction at a dynamic photonic crystal formed in a colloidal solution of quantum dots

A. M. Smirnov, Anastasiya D. Golinskaya, Kseniia V. Ezhova +2 more

Self-diffraction at a one-dimensional dynamic photonic crystal formed in the colloidal solution of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots has been discovered. This self-diffraction appears simultaneously with self-diffraction at induced transparency channels at the resonant excitation of the main electron–hole (excitonic) transition of quantum dots by two laser beams with a Gaussian intensity distribution over the cross section. It is shown that a nonlinear change in the absorption of colloidal quantum dots results in the formation of a transparency channel and an induced amplitude diffraction grating, and a significant nonlinear change in the refractive index (Δ n ≈ 10 −3 ) in the absorbing medium is responsible for the formation of the dynamic photonic crystal. Self-diffracted laser beams are revealed propagating not only in directions corresponding to self-diffraction at the induced diffraction grating but also in directions satisfying the Laue condition.

Nonlinearity of the refractive index due to an excitonic molecule resonance state in CdS

R. Baumert, I. Broser, Klaus Buschick

We report the observation of an intensity-dependent refractive-index nonlinearity in CdS due to a resonance state where an excitonic molecule is created by induced absorption of light. The refractive indexnas a function of the incident laser photon energyEis measured directly by light refraction in thin crystal prisms. A renormalized dielectric function describes the measuredn(E)spectra well. This strong refractive-index nonlinearity is well suited to produce an optical bistability and to further strengthen the evidence of CdS to be an important material for laser-induced dynamic gratings.

Strong Light-Semiconductor Interactions in CdS, GaSe and Optical Bistability

В.С. Днепровский, A. I. Furtichev, V. Klimov +4 more

Changes in absorption and refractive index caused by the absorption of laser light in CdS and GaSe ("dynamic” nonlinearities which may lead to optical bistability /OB/) were investigated. Nonlinear effects may be very strong ("giant" nonlinearities) due to the resonant enhancement near the sharp band edge in the case of resonant excitation of excitons or interband transition.
