Abstract

This paper proposes a novel one-colour Xe–Kr laser induced collisional ionization system. Considering the level scheme of the system, it finds that the initial state of the reaction–the four 4f levels with even J of Xe–can be prepared through method of four-photon resonant excitation by dye laser with wavelength of ∼440 nm. Absorption of an additional photon (the transfer laser) of the same wavelength will complete the laser induced collisional ionization process. The resonance enhanced ionization spectrum of Xe by four laser photons at ∼440 nm is measured through time-of-flight mass spectrometry, this aims at the preparation of the initial state of the system proposed. The Stark broadening of the measured spectrum is observed and consistent with the previous study. Analysis of the measured resonance ionization spectrum implies the feasibility of ∼440 nm four-photon resonant excitation of the initial 4f state of the Xe–Kr system proposed in this paper, which prepares for a further experiment of laser induced collisional ionization.

A novel one-color Xe + -N laser induced collisional charge transfer system is proposed, and preparation of the initial state of the system, i.e., Xe + is experimentally implemented through resonance enhanced multi-photon ionization (REMPI) by ∼440 nm dye laser. The REMPI of Xe is experimentally investigated through time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry and the intensity dependence of Xe + is obtained, aiming at the preparation of Xe + . The resonant ionization spectra of Xe at ∼440 nm under several different conditions are measured, showing the impacts of mode purification and source pressure on the resonant ionization spectrum. The results indicate the feasibility of preparing the initial state of the Xe + -N system by ∼440 nm multi-photon resonant ionization, which prepares for a further experiment of laser-induced collisional charge transfer.

Observation of laser-induced collisional energy transfer in xenon–argon mixtures

W. R. Garrett, S. Henderson, M. G. Payne

By using a multiphoton ionization technique, we observed a laser-induced energy-transfer process of fifth order in Xe–Ar atoms. Through four-photon excitation of the 4f[5/2]J = 2 level of Xe in collision with a ground-state Ar atom and the absorption of one additional photon, the 5s[3/2]J = 1 level of Ar is excited and subsequently ionized. By coincidence the same photon energy required for four-photon excitation of the chosen state in Xe is also adequate for absorption by Ar during the Xe*–Ar collision, thus permitting observation of a fifth-order laser-induced energy transfer in a simple one-color experiment.

Coherent control in four-photon excitation schemes

Natalia E. Karapanagioti, D. Xenakis, Dimitrios Charalambidis +1 more

We report the observation of coherent control of the ionization rate in four-photon resonant, five-photon ionization schemes in Kr and Xe. The intermediate resonance is excited via different interfering channels involving four-photon absorption of the fundamental laser frequency ( ionization) as well as one third harmonic and one fundamental frequency photon absorption ( excitation), a particular aspect of the scheme being that interference occurs at a virtual level. By varying the relative phase of the two electromagnetic fields, a large modulation depth has been observed which is due to the chosen non-linear excitation scheme. In the Xe excitation experiment the interference between the different channels could be additionally probed through the modulation of the third-harmonic signal.

Competition between two-photon-resonant three-photon ionization and four-wave mixing in Xe

Hidekazu Nagai, Taisuke Nakanaga

Competitive inhibition of a resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization process by a resonant four-wave mixing has been observed in Xe atoms. When an intense IR (1064 nm) laser was applied to a sample of Xe which was also being irradiated by a UV laser tuned to the two-photon absorption line of Xe, the two-photon-resonant three-photon ionization signals decreased with increasing IR laser power. This phenomenon is dependent on the resonant states of Xe and the polarization of the two laser beams. Three 6$s$ excited states [5/2]${}_{2}$, [3/2]${}_{2}$, and [1/2]${}_{0}$ were examined. At the [1/2]${}_{0}$ resonant state, the ion signals were not decreased but slightly increased with the increase of the IR laser power. No suppression of the ion signal was observed at the [5/2]${}_{2}$ resonant state, when the polarization directions of the lasers were perpendicular to each other. The result of the polarization dependence reflects the selection rules of four-wave mixing. A simple rate equation analysis including the contribution of two-photon ionization from the [1/2]${}_{0}$ state by the IR laser well represents the IR laser-power dependence of the ion signal.

Ionization mechanisms near three-photon resonances in Xe-Ar and Xe-Kr mixtures

M. G. Payne, W. R. Ferrell, W. R. Garrett

Unfocused linear polarized laser light is used to explore ionization mechanisms in the region near three-photon resonances in Xe. In Xe-Ar and Xe-Kr mixtures at elevated concentrations, processes involving dimer absorption of third-harmonic photons are shown to play an important role in determining ionization yields, and a method for using the observed ionization to measure vacuum ultraviolet absorption is described.
