Difference between Coherent-Pulse and Incoherent-Pulse Photon Echoes in Non-Markovian Behavior

Abstract

By using stochastic theory, we clarified the difference between coherent and incoherent two-pulse photon echoes from the viewpoint of non-Markovian behavior. At the slow modulation limit, the incoherent two-pulse echo was found to exhibit an exp (- c t 2 ) dependence which is in contrast with the exp (- c t 3 ) dependence in the coherent two-pulse echo.

Non-Markovian behavior in stimulated photon echoes: Waiting-time dependence

S. Saikan, J. W-I. Lin, H. Nemoto

By using stochastic theory, we analyze the non-Markovian temporal behavior in four types of photon echoes, including the two-pulse echo, stimulated echo, accumulated echo, and heterodyne-detected accumulated echo. In particular, the origin of the exp(-${\mathit{ct}}^{3}$) dependence of the two-pulse echo in the limit of slow modulation is discussed in detail. It is also pointed out that, at the slow-modulation limit, the temporal behavior of the stimulated echo changes from exp(-${\mathit{ct}}^{3}$) dependence to exp(-${\mathit{ct}}^{2}$) dependence as the waiting time (the time interval between the second and the third excitation pulses) is varied.

Stimulated photon echo under excitation by incoherent and coherent pulses

Баруздин Сергей Анатольевич

Excitation of stimulated photon echo by two incoherent pulses obtained from one source and one coherent pulse is considered. The dependence of the average amplitude of stimulated echo on the parameters of noise pulses is determined. The results can be used for analysis of the corresponding algorithm of excitation of stimulated spin echo, as well as in calculations of characteristics of the signal processors based on the phenomena of photon and spin echoes.

Non-Markovian dynamics in a dense atomic vapor

Virginia O. Lorenz

Two- and three-pulse photon echo spectroscopy in a dense potassium vapor reveals a non-Markovian correlation function of frequency fluctuations. Through comparison with calculations using an exciton picture a slowly-decaying component of the correlation function is attributed to long-range resonant interactions. A time-resolved photon echo experiment shows the photon-echo-like behavior at short timescales.

Amplitude characteristics of excitation of stimulated photon echo by noise and coherent pulses

Баруздин Сергей Анатольевич

The algorithm of excitation of a stimulated photon echo by two incoherent white noise Gaussian pulses and delta-like light pulses is studied. The average complex envelope of the echo is determined by solving Bloch equations. The results obtained can be used in spectroscopy and in the analysis of nonlinear characteristics of excitation in photon processors based on the saturation effect. The results can be also generalised to the analogous regime of excitation of a spin echo.

Effects of spectral diffusion in incoherent photon-echo experiments

Yue Bai, M. D. Fayer

The application of the incoherent photon-echo experiment to complex systems is analyzed. In systems in which spectral diffusion occurs, incoherent echo measurements do not yield the same optical dephasing rate as conventional two-pulse photon-echo measurements. The difference can be of major significance. To make the calculations explicit, optical dephasing in a glass is considered using the tunneling two-level system model.
