Indeterminacy of amplitude and phase variables in classical dynamical systems: The harmonic oscillator

Abstract

The amplitude and phase are shown to be variables that are not uniquely determined for the one-dimensional time-dependent harmonic-oscillator equation. Even when the parameter is time independent, it is shown that the amplitude and frequency may be time dependent and the phase nonlinear with respect to time. The consequences of this indeterminacy in the energy and the orthogonal-functions invariant are evaluated. The measurement of these quantities is discussed.

Quantum derivation of Manley Rowe type relations

M. Fernández‐Guasti, H. M. Moya-Cessa

The Ermakov Lewis quantum invariant for the time dependent harmonic oscillator is expressed in terms of number and phase operators. The identification of these variables is made in accordance with the correspondence principle and the amplitude and phase representation of the classical orthogonal functions invariant. The relationship between the number and phase operators is established through this invariant as the system evolves from one frequency to another. In the specific case where the excitations represent the photon number, these relations are equivalent to the power density transport equations derived in nonlinear optical processes.

Harmonic oscillators coupled time-dependent

Diego Ximenes Macedo

In this work we present the classical and quantum solutions of time-dependent coupled harmonic oscillators. In these systems the masses, frequencies and coupling parameter (k) are functions of time. Four systems are investigated. To obtain the classical solutions we use a coordinate and momentum transformations along with a canonical transformation to write the original Hamiltonian as the sum of two Hamiltonians of uncoupled harmonic oscillators with modified time-dependent frequencies and unitary masses. We find the analytical expression for position and velocity of each oscillator of the systems. To obtain the exact quantum solutions we use a unitary transformation and the Lewis and Riesenfeld invariant method. The wave functions obtained are written in terms of a c-number quantity () which is solution of the Milne-Pinney equation. For each system we solve the respective Milne-Pinney equation and discuss how the quantum fluctuations and the uncertainty product evolve with time.

Even and Odd Coherent States for Time-Dependent Harmonic Oscillator

Lian-Fu Wei, Qingyi Yang, Shun-Jin Wang

The dynamical invariant for a general time-dependent harmonic oscillator is constructed by making use of two linearly independent solutions to the classical equation of motion. In terms of this dynamical invariant we define the time-dependent creation and annihilation operators and relevantly introduce even and odd coherent states for time-dependent harmonic oscillator. The mathematical and quantum statistical properties of these states are discussed in detail. The harmonic oscillator with periodically varying frequency is treated as a demonstration of our general approach.

Exact evolution of the generalized damped harmonic oscillator

Mustapha Maamache, Hichem Choutri

In this paper we use the algebraic and the invariant method to study the time-dependent damped harmonic oscillator from classical and quantum points of view. The solution of the classical equation of motion and the wavefunction solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation are found explicitly. We show that the original time-dependent quantum-mechanical problem is completely related to the well known time-independent harmonic oscillator. In addition, we elucidate the intimate connection between the damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) and the generalized harmonic oscillator (GHO). More importantly, the evolution of the states of the DHO cannot be cyclic, in contradistinction with the states of the GHO. Explicit expressions for both the dynamical and the geometric angles and phases are deduced in the adiabatic limit. The coherent states describing the invariant-angle variables of the classical DHO are constructed; they allow us to recover the classical evolution and invariant from the quantum evolution.

Invariants for time-dependent harmonic oscillators from real representation of solution

Wu Chuang

The invariants for the time-dependent one-dimensional harmonic oscillator and the time-dependent two-dimensional harmonic oscillator in a static magnetic field are derived from the real representation of the exact solution to the equation of motion.Mathematically, the orthogonal functions invariant is the angular momentum of an isotropic time-dependent two-dimensional harmonic oscillator.Based on the invariants obtained here, the wave function for time-dependent two-dimensional harmonic oscillator in a static magnetic field in cylindrical coordinate is simply derived and the dynamical and geometrical phases are easily got by expressing the wave function as the superpositions of the wave functions of time-dependent two-dimensional harmonic oscillator in rectangular coordinate.

The Wave Function and the Minimum Uncertainty Function of the Time Dependent Harmonic Oscillator(New Developments in Statistical Physics Similarities in Diversities,YITP Workshop)

Kyu Hwang Yeon, Chung‐In Um, Thomas F. George

The time dependent harmonic oscillator is solved explicitly for quantum mechanics by the operator method with an auxiliary condition as the classical solution. Two classical invariant quantities which determine whether or not the system is bound are derived by the classical equation of motion. We obtain the invariant operator from one classical invariant quantity. Its eigenfunction is related to the solution of Schrodinger equation of the system and its eigenvalue is related to another classical quantity. The wave function is evaluated exactly by the eigenfunction of the invariant operator but it is not the eigenfunction of the Hamiltonian of the system. The uncertainty which calculates with the wave function is not a minimum one. We will confirm that the function which holds minimum uncertainty is a eigenfunction of the Hamiltonian.
