Absence of Transition in Photoexcited States across the One-Dimensional CDW–SDW Phase Boundary

Abstract

We theoretically investigate how the photoexcited states change across the phase boundary between the charge density wave (CDW) and the spin density wave (SDW) states in the one-dimensional (1D) and the two-dimensional (2D) Pariser–Parr–Pople models in the strong interaction case. In the 1D case, the CDW (singlet spin pair) droplet states dominate light absorption spectrum in the SDW (CDW) ground state region near the phase boundary. These photoexcited states exhibit crossover behavior across the phase boundary, that is, the density of the CDW region gradually increases across the phase boundary from the SDW to the CDW ground state region. On the contrary, in the 2D case, the bound holon–doublon (singlet spin) pair state dominates the light absorption spectrum, and the quantum fluctuations of the CDW or the singlet spin pair domain are negligible in the dominant photoexcited state even near the phase boundary. As a result, the transition occurs in the dominant photoexcited state at the ground state phase boundary.

Quantum coherence and decoherence of correlated electron states in the one-dimensional charge-density-wave–spin-density-wave phase transition

Norikazu Tomita

The charge-density-wave (CDW)--spin-density-wave (SDW) phase transition of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model is investigated in the strong correlation regime, from the viewpoint of the quantum coherence or decoherence of the two correlated states. In the finite-size system, the CDW wave function, near the phase boundary, has the significant quantum fluctuations due to the SDW domains. The superposition of these SDW domains leads to the quantum coherence between the CDW and SDW wave functions. However, the scaling analysis shows that the density of the SDW fluctuations becomes asymptotically zero in the infinite-size limit, which indicates the decoherence of the two states in the bulk phase transition.

Dynamics of photoinduced insulator-metal transition in one-dimensional Mott insulators

Akira Takahashi

We theoretically investigate the dynamics of insulator-metal transition induced by light-pulse excitation in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) Mott insulators. We adopt the Pariser-Parr-Pople model, and pump-probe signal is obtained by numerically calculating the time development of the state excited by a light pulse. In the 1D case, when photoexcitation density is below about 10%, an extremely small portion of the energy eigenstates dominates the optical process, and the spin-charge separation holds in these dominant energy eigenstates. As a result, the Mott gap and the short-range antiferromagnetic (AF) spin order are preserved, and the spin relaxation does not occur. When the density is above the value, a metallic state without the Mott gap is photogenerated, and the magnitude of the short-range AF spin order is significantly reduced by photoexcitation. This is consistent with the experimentally observed photoinduced Mott transition. Furthermore, the spin relaxation occurs in the metallic state. This photoinduced Mott transition is a manifestation of the spin-charge coupling in the intensely photoexcited states. In the 2D case, the spin and the charge degrees of freedom are coupled even in the weakly photoexcited states, and the characteristic crossover associated with the excitation density is not observed.

Auger Recombination of Photogenerated Charges in One-Dimensional Mott Insulators

Mami Segawa, Akira Takahashi, Hiroki Gomi +1 more

We theoretically investigate the dynamics of photoexcited states in one-dimensional Mott insulators. We adopt the Pariser–Parr–Pople model, and numerically calculate the time development of the nonequilibrium state excited by a light pulse. In the weaker light excitation case where the maximum photoexcitation density is below about 18%, the charge carriers in the photoexcited states are holons and doublons, and the geminate recombination of bound doublon–holon pairs, namely, the Auger recombination process dominates the decay of the photogenerated holons and doublons with the realistic Coulomb parameters. In the stronger light excitation case where the density is above the value, the charge carriers of the photoexcited states cannot be described by holons and doublons. As a result, the Auger recombination process of doublon–holon pairs is not the main decay route of the photogenerated charges. Furthermore, the spin and the charge degrees of freedom are coupled, and spin relaxation occurs in the photoexcited states. As the density of the photogenerated charge carriers becomes larger, the decay time decreases. This tendency is consistent with experiments.

Mechanism of CDW-SDW Transition in One Dimension

Masaaki Nakamura

The phase transition between charge- and spin-density-wave (CDW, SDW) phases is studied in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half-filling. We discuss whether the transition can be described by the Gaussian and the spin-gap transitions under charge-spin separation, or by a direct CDW-SDW transition. We determine these phase boundaries by level crossings of excitation spectra which are identified according to discrete symmetries of wave functions. We conclude that the Gaussian and the spin-gap transitions take place separately from weak- to intermediate-coupling region. This means that the third phase exists between the CDW and the SDW states. Our results are also consistent with those of the strong-coupling perturbative expansion and of the direct evaluation of order parameters.

DMRG analysis of the SDW-CDW crossover region in the 1D half-filled Hubbard-Holstein model

Satoshi Ejima, H Fehske

In order to clarify the physics of the crossover from a spin-density-wave (SDW) Mott insulator to a charge-density-wave (CDW) Peierls insulator in one-dimensional (1D) systems, we investigate the Hubbard-Holstein Hamiltonian at half filling within a density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) approach. Determining the spin and charge correlation exponents, the momentum distribution function, and various excitation gaps, we confirm that an intervening metallic phase expands the SDW-CDW transition in the weak-coupling regime.

Existence of an Intermediate Metallic Phase at the SDW-CDW Crossover Region in the One-Dimensional Holstein-Hubbard Model at Half-Filling

Ashok Chatterjee

The Holstein-Hubbard model serves as a useful framework to investigate this interplay between the phonon-induced electron-electron attractive interaction and the direct Coulomb repulsion and can afford interesting phase diagrams due to competition among charge-density wave (CDW), spin-density wave (SDW), and superconductivity. However the detailed nature of the CDW-SDW transition is still not very well known. It is generally believed that the system undergoes a direct insulator to insulator transition from CDW to SDW with the increase of the on-site Coulomb repulsion for a given strength of the electron-phonon coupling and this is the main bottleneck for the polaronic/bipolaronic mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. We have recently made an investigation to study the nature of the transition from SDW phase to CDW phase within the framework of a one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model at half-filling using a variational method. We find that an intervening metallic phase may exist at the crossover region of the CDW-SDW transition. We have also observed that if the anharmonicity of the phonons is taken into account, this metallic phase widens and the polarons become more mobile, which is a more favorable situation from the point of view of superconductivity. We shall finally show that an improved variational calculation widens the metallic phase and makes the polarons more mobile, which reconfirms the existence of the intermediate metallic phase at the SDW-CDW crossover region.
