Controlling quantum motion

Abstract

The techniques of controlling the free evolution of a nonrelativistic charged particle by time-dependent magnetic fields are proposed and the possibility of more general operations upon the Schrödinger wave packet is discussed. It is found that a properly programmed sequence of magnetic pulses can invert the free evolution process, forcing an arbitrary wave packet to ‘‘go back in time’’ to recover its past shape. Our manipulation prescriptions hold also for nonrelativistic particles of arbitrary spin.

Manipulation of quantum evolution

David Jose Fernandez Cabera, Bogdan Mielnik

The free evolution of a non-relativistic charged particle is manipulated using time-dependent magnetic fields. It is shown that the application of a programmed sequence of magnetic pulses can invert the free evolution process, forcing an arbitrary wave packet to 'go back in time' to recover its past shape. The possibility of more general operations upon the Schrodinger wave packet is discussed.

Operational techniques for the Floquet Hamiltonians

Bogdan Mielnik, David J. Fernández C.

The control operations on a charged non-relativistic particle by variable external fields are examined. Contrasting with the static theory, the effective Hamiltonians for the sequences of field pulses have not necessarily lower bounds. In particular, the Floquet systems of rotating fields can generate the harmonic oscillators turned upside down, with infinite ladders of negative levels. The Floquet Hamiltonians reduced to pure negative kinetic energy can also be achieved; they permit to invert the free evolution of Schrodinger's particle, opening new perspectives in the control techniques. The manipulation of Hamiltonians without lower bounds imply instability at the level of the quantum field theory.

CONTROLLING THE QUANTUM ROTOR WITH A TIME-DEPENDENT MAGNETIC FLUX

Alexandre G. M. Schmidt, Bruno N. Martins

We study the possibility of controlling a quantum rotor interacting with a time-dependent external field, namely, using a continuous or a piecewise continuous (bang-bang control) magnetic flux. Using the exact eigenfunctions we show how to steer a wave-packet constructed as a superposition of these eigenstates. In the first case we show how to steer a Gaussian wave-packet (GWP) to two other positions: one of them which would not be realized if the evolution were free, and the second is the one where wave-packet revival takes place. In the piecewise approach we implement a kind of tracking control, i.e. before steering it to the final target we achieve another given GWP.

A possible techniques to invert the free evolution in the Schrödinger’s quantum mechanics are presented and their pertinence to more general control problems is discussed. A new sense of the traditional Strutt diagram is exhibited.

A wave-packet description of the motion of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field

William Zimmermann

A discussion is given of the construction of wave packets to describe the motion of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field. Examples are given of the construction of wave packets from eigenstates of the Hamiltonian for both the Landau gauge in Cartesian coordinates and the cylindrically symmetric gauge in cylindrical coordinates.

Quantum Dynamics and Non-Inertial Frames of Reference. III: Charged Particle in Time-Dependent Uniform Electromagnetic Field

Shuji Takagi

By successive applications of time-dependent rotation, translation and dilatation, it is shown that a charged time-dependent harmonic oscillator in a uniform time-dependent electromagnetic field is equivalent to a free particle. This equivalence is employed to present a simple derivation of the Feynman kernel as well as to obtain a concrete picture of the time evolution of a generic wave packet. A compact formula for an evolving anisotropic Gaussian packet is also derived. A special case of this formula gives a squeezed coherent state for a harmonic oscillator whose frequency is an arbitrary function of time. Finally we discuss an Aharonov-Bohm-Berry-like phase associated with a wave packet whose center traces a closed circuit.
