Quantum dynamics of a degenerate Bose gas: a P-representation approach

K. G. Petrosyan, Li You

Summary form only given. The experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensation has stimulated much interest in investigating the rich physics of these trapped weakly interacting Bose gases. Although much has been learned within the last several years, more subtle aspects of the condensation process and the quantum dynamics await further elucidation. In this paper, we use the well-established phase space techniques, in particular, the P-representation approach, to study the quantum dynamics of trapped degenerate Bose gases. The system under consideration is described by a Hamiltonian and a functional P-representation quasiprobability distribution is derived. We have developed a self-consistent approximation scheme, which allows us to solve the corresponding stochastic differential equations. Various results are reported.

Negative quasiprobability trajectories for Bell-diagonal states under local decoherence

Qing Yu, Kun Zhang, Yang-Yang Chen +1 more

The fluctuation theorem (FT) relates microscopic trajectory distributions to macroscopic averages. Using quasiprobability trajectories, this framework has recently been extended to quantum information dynamics. Despite sharing the form of conventional thermodynamic FTs, information FTs involve quasiprobabilities whose negativity and statistical properties remain poorly understood. We analytically determine the properties of negative distributions based on the two-qubit Bell-diagonal states evolving under local dephasing, depolarizing, and amplitude-damping channels. We show that the occurrence of negative quasiprobabilities is not determined by the entanglement or Bell nonlocality of the initial state. Instead, a diagonal-interference decomposition of the transition quasiprobability provides a sufficient condition for negativity. More importantly, we prove that quasiprobability distributions containing negative weights can violate Horváth's necessary and sufficient criterion for the Jensen-Steffensen inequality to hold for every continuous convex function, even though the specific exponential Jensen-like relation enforced by the FT and the quantum data-processing inequality remains valid. This trajectory-level contrast with classical stochastic descriptions reveals a distinctive feature of quantum information dynamics that is invisible when only the corresponding average-level information inequalities are considered.

Nonclassicality criteria: Quasiprobability distributions and correlation functions

Moorad Alexanian

We use the exact calculation of the quantum mechanical, temporal characteristic function $\ensuremath{\chi}(\ensuremath{\eta})$ and the degree of second-order coherence ${g}^{(2)}(\ensuremath{\tau})$ for a single-mode, degenerate parametric amplifier for a system in the Gaussian state, viz., a displaced-squeezed thermal state, to study the different criteria for nonclassicality. In particular, we contrast criteria that involve only one-time functions of the dynamical system, for instance, the quasiprobability distribution $P(\ensuremath{\beta})$ of the Glauber-Sudarshan coherent or P representation of the density of state and the Mandel ${Q}_{M}(\ensuremath{\tau})$ parameter, versus the criteria associated with the two-time correlation function ${g}^{(2)}(\ensuremath{\tau})$.
