Coherent transient investigation in electromagnetically induced transparency with double windows

Xiaoli Li

A theoretical study of the time-dependent probe response of a single electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) window to double EIT windows is presented by numerically solving the equations of motion of the density matrix in a quasi-A-four-level configuration. There is a coherent transient process with high quantum beats. This effect can be explained using the dressed state formalism. The quantum beats result from quantum coherence effect between the levels driven by RF field. The results show that when the probe field is on resonance with a bare-state transition, the beat frequency is one-half of RF Rabi frequency in transient absorption response. While the probe field is on resonance with a dressed-state transition, which results from the atom system interaction with strong RF field, the beat frequency equals the RF Rabi frequency in transient absorption response.

Transient properties in two-level atoms near a photonic band edge

XS Xu, By Cheng, Zhang Dz

Using the response formula of photonic crystals and Bloch equations, we analyzed the coherent emission in a two-level atom embedded in an arbitrary photonic crystal. We derived a formula for the transient emission expressed by the photon density of states (DOS), the Rabi frequency, and the background decay. Near the band edge, when the ratio of the Rabi frequency to the decay rate is a proper value, a transient gain occurs and the sharp structures of the DOS near the band edge lead to a drastic enhancement of the emission and the oscillation of the emission.

Coherent optical transients in a three-level atomic system

Yifu Zhu

We analyze the transient response induced by a resonant, weak probe laser in a three-level V-type system driven by a strong, resonant coupling laser. The Rabi oscillation of the probe transition contains two frequencies determined by the coupling laser, and the ratio of the two-frequency components can be controlled by a time delay between the probe and the coupling laser. In particular, when both lasers are turned on simultaneously, the optical nutation with the frequency approximately equal to the Rabi frequency of the coupling laser is dominant; when the probe laser is turned on well after the steady state is reached for the coupling transition, the Rabi oscillation of the probe transition still occurs, and the oscillatory frequency is approximately equal to half of the Rabi frequency of the coupling laser. When both the probe and the coupling lasers are strong, the mutual interaction of the two fields and the atomic system may revive the optical nutation with each other.
