Abstract

The energy level structure of the CdSSe microcrystallites in the glass matrix has been obtained from absorption spectra. The analysis takes into account the quantum-size effect and the variation of both microcrystallite radius and composition. Peculiarities of the absorption saturation and the most promising spectral regions for the observation of optical bistability have been determined.

Nonlinear-optical properties of semiconductor composite materials

Y. Q. Li, R. Inguva, C. M. Bowden +1 more

The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a nonlinear medium composed of semiconductor microcrystallites embedded in a host medium has been investigated. Explicit results are given for the case of cadmium sulfide grains in glass when a saturable two-level approximation is used for the nonlinear dielectric function. The bistable behavior, noticed earlier by Chemla and Miller [ Opt. Lett.11, 522 ( 1986)], for single grains is manifested in the propagation studies conducted here by the occurrence of a discontinuity in the index of refraction in the medium. Various approximations are used to obtain the optical bistability properties. Possible applications of this feature are pointed out.

Femtosecond coherent absorption changes in CdSSe quantum dot-doped glasses

Kenneth W. DeLong, Junji Yumoto, Naoshi Uesugi

We report what we believe to be the first observation of coherent transient absorption changes in glasses doped with quantum dots of CdS0.12Se0.88. These observations were made at room temperature with on-resonant laser pumping. We observe a transient bleaching on the high energy side of the pump center wavelength, and a transient absorption increase on the low energy side. The transient effects last for a time about equal to the pump pulse duration, 80 fsec, after which real carrier generation masks the effects. The results can be qualitatively explained by a spectral shift in the direction predicted by the optical Stark effect. This was a pump-probe experiment where the 622-nm pump center wavelength was on the long wavelength side of the lowest energy transition in the quantum dots but still well within the absorption band. The radii of the microcrystallites ranged from 20 to 40 Å, and T2 in similar samples was estimated to be 60 fsec or less. Although the laser pulsewidth is longer than the dephasing time in the sample, we were still able to see coherent effects.

Optical absorption saturation of semiconductor quantum dots

David A. B. Miller, D. S. Chemla, Stefan Schmitt-Rink

We have analyzed theoretically the optical absorption saturation of semiconductor microcrystallites so small that they show strong quantum confinement in all three dimensions [quantum dots (QDs)]. We show that saturation of the lowest energy excited state becomes extremely simple to describe even including excitonic effects. Such QDs exhibit novel physical properties, including very large optical absorption per unit volume, that make QDs very attractive nonlinear media.

Studies on the Dynanics of Optical Bistability Swithing in the Internal Fabry-Perot Cavity CdSxSe1-x-Doped Glass Waveguide Device

Wenji Peng, Qingxing Li, Z. X. Yu +2 more

Glasses doped with semiconductor microcrystalline CdS x Se1- x (10 nm – 100 nm in dimension) have recently attracted muuch interest due to their large third-order nonlinearities and fast response times. Jain and Lind have been reported the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities χ(8) of CdS x Se1- x -doped glasses were measured to be 10-9–10-8 esu in a degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) experiment and that the origin of the nonlinearity can be attributed to the generation of a short-live electron-hole plasma (band-filling effect)1. The nonlinear response of CdS x Se1- x -doped glass has been got to be about 3.5 ps2. So it has great potential to be used in developing high-speed and low-power nonlinear optical devices. Junji Yumoto8 observed the optical bistablility made using an external Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity containing CdS x Se1- x -doped glasses with bistable-switching time of 25 ps. In this paper we report the observation of optical bistability of an internal F-P cavity structure single-mode waveguide device made of CdS x Se1−x-doped glass.

Coherent transients in CdSSe microcrystallites doped in glasses

Junji Yumoto, Kenneth W. DeLong, Naoshi Uesugi

Coherent transient effects in CdSSe microcrystallites are observed by a pump-probe measurement. The probe transmission shows oscillatory structures in the temporal and spectral domains when the probe reaches the sample before the pump. This oscillation is attributed to the photon echo propagating in the direction of the probe. The A-B splitting of the valence sublevel in CdSSe microcrystallites hidden in the wide inhomogeneous broadening can be resolved using the polarization dependence of the transitions from A and B valence sublevels to the conduction sublevel.

Linear- and nonlinear-optical properties of free and bound excitons in CdS and applications in bistable devices

M. Dagenais, Wayne F. Sharfin

A general discussion of the linear-optical properties of free and bound excitons in direct-gap semiconductors at low temperature is presented. This discussion then specializes to CdS. The nonlinear-optical response of CdS is introduced by first discussing the saturation behavior of bound excitons. A new type of cavityless optical bistability based on induced absorption near the free and bound excitons is described. Finally, fast all-optical switching (<1 nsec) at very low switching energies (<8 pJ) is demonstrated, using the giant nonlinearity associated with bound excitons.
