Quantum Dynamics of a Nonlinear Birefringent Model with Anticorrelated Field States

Abstract

In this paper, anticorrelated field states with a binomial distribution over orthogonal polarizations, interacting with a nonlinear birefringent medium, are discussed. The field states are the SU(2) coherent states, where the angular momentum operators are realized as bilinear products of the boson operators associated with the two polarizations. The system discussed here provides an optical realization of a nonlinear rotator. We study the quantum dynamics of the statistical properties of the field and the evolution of the degree of polarization.

Quantum dynamics of the nonlinear rotator and the effects of continual spin measurement

Barry C. Sanders

The quantum and classical dynamics of the nonlinear oscillator are contrasted by comparing the evolution of the quantum Q function with that of a similar classical probability distribution. The quantum nonlinear rotator is shown to generate a superposition of two distinct coherent states from a coherent-state input. Measurements of the angular-momentum components and the signature of a superposition state are discussed. The effects of a continual measurement of one angular-momentum component are introduced into the model, and its effects on quantum coherences are shown to degrade the quantum coherence effects. We present a quantum optical model that obeys the nonlinear rotator dynamics and can generate superpositions of SU(2) coherent states of the two-mode electromagnetic field.

Interaction of a Two-level Atom with One Mode of Anticorrelated Two-mode Field States

Christopher C. Gerry, Jerry Kiefer

We study the time evolution of a single two-level atom interacting with one mode of anticorrelated two-mode field states. The anticorrelated field states are SU(2) coherent states constructed from Schwinger's two-boson representation of the angular momentum algebra. We assume that only one of the modes is near resonance with the atom. Because of the anticorrelation in the initial field state, no atomic moment develops. We study the evolution of the atomic inversion and the inversion and the phase space quasi-probability SU(2) Q-function of the field.

Nonlinear optical effects on the atom–field interaction based on the nonlinear coherent states approach

Mojgan Momeni-Demneh, Ali Mahdifar, R. Roknizadeh

In this paper, to study the effects of a nonlinear medium on the atom–field interaction, we use the nonlinear coherent states approach. For this purpose, we choose the two-mode cross-Kerr as our nonlinear optical phenomena, and with the use of its algebra, we show that it can be considered as a deformed oscillator as well as a deformed su(2) algebra. Then we construct the associated two-mode nonlinear coherent states and investigate their statistical properties. After that, as an example of applicability of the constructed coherent states, we investigate the nonlinear effects of the medium on the dynamics of atom–field interaction within the framework of the coherent states. By using the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we study the effect of the nonlinear medium on the occupation probabilities of the atomic levels and consider the relation between the revival time of the atomic occupation probabilities and the nonlinear parameter of the medium. Then, to study the nonlinear effects on the dynamical properties of the cavity field, we consider the photon distribution, correlation function, Mandel parameters of the field, von Neumann entropy, and also the squeezing. Particularly, the nonlinearity of the media on the nonclassical properties of the two modes is clarified.

Generalized coherent state for bosonic realization of SU(2)Lie algebra

Vladimír Bužek, Tran Quang

We have investigated the statistical properties of fields in the SU(2) generalized coherent state built on the bosonic (Schwinger) representation of the generators of SU(2) Lie algebra. We have shown that there are sub-Poissonian photon statistics as well as anticorrelations. Schemes for the generation of the states under consideration are discussed. We show that in the relevant processes either fields that are highly sub-Poissonian can be generated or a field in one mode with sub-Poissonian statistics can be transformed into another field that also has sub-Poissonian statistics.

Quantum theory of propagation of elliptically polarized light through a Kerr medium

G. S. Agarwal, Ravinder Rupchand Puri

We consider quantum-mechanically partially polarized light propagating through a Kerr-like medium. Using the usual form of the induced polarization P=A(E\ensuremath{\cdot}${\mathrm{E}}^{\mathrm{*}}$)E+B(E\ensuremath{\cdot}${\mathrm{E})\mathrm{E}}^{\mathrm{*}}$, the theory is formulated in terms of an effective Hamiltonian which is quartic in terms of the operators for two orthogonally polarized modes. Exact solutions in closed form for the Heisenberg equations of motion are obtained. These solutions are used to evaluate the physical behavior of various observables as the field propagates through a nonlinear medium. We also present explicit results for the time evolution of the input coherent and Fock states of the field. We show the generation of states that are macroscopic superposition of coherent states. We also find that if the input field is completely polarized, then due to quantum effects the output field becomes partially polarized. This is in contrast to the classical prediction and can have an important bearing on questions like topological phases of light propagating through a nonlinear medium. Numerical results for the energy in each mode, the correlation between two modes, and the higher-order correlations are presented. The input photon statistics is found to make a considerable difference in the dynamics.

Quantum field theory of optical birefringence phenomena I. Linear and nonlinear optical rotation

P. W. Atkins, Laurence David Barron

Abstract A general approach to the discussion of optical birefringence phenomena is presented. It is based on the S-matrix approach to photon scattering in a nonrelativistic quantum field theoretical formalism and the Stokes operator description of polarization. The use of a canonically transformed interaction Hamiltonian in combination with diagrammatic perturbation theory enables the response of a system to electromagnetic radiation to be calculated in a straightforward and consistent manner to any order in the perturbation, and the effect of static fields is included easily. As an illustration, the angle of rotation of a beam of plane-polarized light by a solution of optically active molecules is calculated and the intensity dependence of the angle determined. The latter phenomenon should become apparent at high photon flux densities particularly when ω, the frequency of the incident light, or 2ω are similar to electronic excitation frequencies in the optically active molecules.
