Reachable set for open single spin system

Abstract

In this article we study the reachable set of open single spin systems in Markovian environment by using coherent control. Given the initial state, we compute all the possible states to which the spin can be driven to at a given time. Such characterization of reachable set gives the physical limits of controlled evolution of quantum systems and provide optimal control strategies achieving these limits.

Approximation of reachable sets for coherently controlled open quantum systems: Application to quantum state engineering

Jun Li, Dawei Lu, Zhihuang Luo +3 more

Precisely characterizing and controlling realistic quantum systems under noises is a challenging frontier in quantum sciences and technologies. In developing reliable controls for open quantum systems, one is often confronted with the problem of the lack of knowledge on the system controllability. The purpose of this paper is to give a numerical approach to this problem, that is, to approximately compute the reachable set of states for coherently controlled quantum Markovian systems. The approximation consists of setting both upper and lower bounds for system's reachable region of states. Furthermore, we apply our reachability analysis to the control of the relaxation dynamics of a two-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance spin system. We implement some experimental tasks of quantum state engineering in this open system at a near optimal performance in view of purity: e.g., increasing polarization and preparing pseudopure states. These results demonstrate the usefulness of our theory and show interesting and promising applications of environment-assisted quantum dynamics.

Control of single spin in Markovian environment

Haidong Yuan

In this article we study the control of single spin in Markovian environment. Given an initial state, we compute all the possible states to which the spin can be driven at arbitrary time, under the assumption that fast unitary operations on the single spin are available.

Reachability in Controlled Markovian Quantum Systems

vom Ende, Frederik

We study reachable sets of coherently controllable open quantum systems with switchable coupling of two models: we show that finite-dimensional systems coupled to a temperature-zero bath allow for approximately generating every quantum state from every initial state. Also studying d-majorization yields an upper bound for non-zero temperature. Then we consider infinite-dimensional open systems following a unital evolution. For arbitrary drift, bounded control Hamiltonians, and noise generated by a compact normal operator, one can approximately reach any state majorized by the initial one.

Reachable-set characterization of an open quantum system by the quantum speed limit

K. Kobayashi

In recent years, the idea of reachable-set characterization based on the quantum speed limit (QSL) was proposed by Arenz et al. [New J. Phys. 19, 103015 (2017)]; that is, the reachable set of the target unitary gate in a closed qubit system can be characterized by considering the QSL as the necessary condition that the control setup must satisfy in order to achieve the goal. Inspired by this idea, in this paper we characterize a general Markovian open quantum system based on the QSL derived by Kobayashi and Yamamoto [Phys. Rev. A 102, 042606 (2020)]. Note that this bound is not only explicitly computable with respect to system parameters but also tighter than the other bounds. Some examples for demonstrating this analysis will be given.

Exploring the Limits of Open Quantum Dynamics I: Motivation, New Results from Toy Models to Applications

Thomas Schulte‐Herbrüggen, Frederik vom Ende, Gunther Dirr

Which quantum states can be reached by controlling open Markovian $n$-level quantum systems? Here, we address reachable sets of coherently controllable quantum systems with switchable coupling to a thermal bath of temperature $T$. The core problem reduces to a toy model of studying points in the standard simplex allowing for two types of controls: (i) permutations within the simplex, (ii) contractions by a dissipative semigroup. By illustration, we put the problem into context and show how toy-model solutions pertain to the reachable set of the original controlled Markovian quantum system. Beyond the case $T=0$ (amplitude damping) we present new results for $0

Reachable sets for two-level open quantum systems driven by coherent and incoherent controls

Lev Vyacheslavovich Lokutsievskiy, Alexander Nikolaevich Pechen

Abstract In this work, we study controllability in the set of all density matrices for a two-level open quantum system driven by coherent and incoherent controls. In Pechen (2011 Phys. Rev. A 84 042106) an approximate controllability, i.e. controllability with some precision, was shown for generic N -level open quantum systems driven by coherent and incoherent controls. However, the explicit formulation of this property, including the behavior of this precision as a function of transition frequencies and decoherence rates of the system, was not known. The present work provides a rigorous analytical study of reachable sets for two-level open quantum systems. First, it is shown that for N = 2 the presence of incoherent control does not affect the reachable set (while incoherent control may affect the time necessary to reach particular state). Second, the reachable set in the Bloch ball is described and it is shown that already just for one coherent control any point in the Bloch ball can be achieved with precision δ ∼ γ / ω , where γ is the decoherence rate and ω is the transition frequency. Typical values are δ ≲ 10 −3 that implies high accuracy of achieving any density matrix. Moreover, we show that most points in the Bloch ball can be exactly reached, except of two lacunae of size ∼ δ . For two coherent controls, the system is shown to be completely controllable in the set of all density matrices. Third, the reachable set as a function of the final time is found and shown to exhibit a non-trivial structure.
