Numerical solution of thed=∞ Hubbard model: Evidence for a Mott transition

Abstract

We present a numerical solution of the infinite-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperature in the paramagnetic phase. The problem reduces to a single-impurity Anderson model supplemented by a self-consistency condition. Using Monte Carlo methods and complete enumeration we determine the imaginary-time Green's function, the density of doubly occupied sites, and the compressibility close to half filling. All three quantities present direct evidence for a Mott insulating phase above a critical value of U.

Mott transition in thed=∞ Hubbard model at zero temperature

X. Y. Zhang, Marcelo J. Rozenberg, Gabriel Kotliar

Using a combination of perturbation theory and quantum Monte Carlo, we elucidate the behavior of the single-particle Green's function and the local spin-spin correlation function near the Mott transition in the infinite dimensional Hubbard model at half filling. The model has three fixed points: the Fermi liquid phase qualitatively described by the Brinkman-Rice picture, the insulating phase resembling Hubbard's solution, and an unstable Mott point which connects the two.

Physical properties of the half-filled Hubbard model in infinite dimensions

Antoine Georges, Werner Krauth

A detailed quantitative study of the physical properties of the infinite-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling is presented. The method makes use of an exact mapping onto a single-impurity model supplemented by a self-consistency condition. This coupled problem is solved numerically. Results for thermodynamic quantities (specific heat, entropy, . . .), one-particle spectral properties, and magnetic properties (response to a uniform magnetic field) are presented and discussed. The nature of the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition found in this model is investigated. A numerical solution of the mean-field equations inside the antiferromagnetic phase is also reported.

Exact diagonalization approach to correlated fermions in infinite dimensions: Mott transition and superconductivity

Michel Caffarel, Werner Krauth

We present a powerful method for calculating the thermodynamic properties of infinite-dimensional Hubbard-type models using an exact diagonalization of an Anderson model with a finite number of sites. The resolution obtained for Green's functions is far superior to that of quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We apply the method to the half-filled Hubbard model for a discussion of the metal-insulator transition, and to the two-band Hubbard model where we find direct evidence for the existence of a superconducting instability at low temperatures.

Exact Diagonalization Approach for the infinite D Hubbard Model

Michel Caffarel, Werner Krauth

We present a powerful method for calculating the thermodynamic properties of the Hubbard model in infinite dimensions, using an exact diagonalization of an Anderson model with a finite number of sites. At finite temperatures, the explicit diagonalization of the Anderson Hamiltonian allows the calculation of Green's functions with a resolution far superior to that of Quantum Monte Carlo calculations. At zero temperature, the Lanczòs method is used and yields the essentially exact zero-temperature solution of the model, except in a region of very small frequencies. Numerical results for the half-filled case in the paramagnetic phase (quasi-particle weight, self-energy, and also real-frequency spectral densities) are presented.

Analytic treatment of Mott-Hubbard transition in the half-filled Hubbard model and its thermodynamics

Jongbae Hong, Hae‐Young Kee

The Mott-Hubbard transition in the half-filled Hubbard model is studied analytically on a Bethe lattice for the paramagnetic state and the classical N\'eel state. The single-particle density of states is obtained by calculating the one-particle Green's function represented by the Lanczos infinite continued fraction. The paramagnetic solution shows that the Mott-Hubbard transition is signaled by both collapsing Hubbard bands at ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$=2${\mathit{t}}_{\mathrm{*}}$ and a sharp Lorentzian peak appearing at midgap at U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$. For the N\'eel state, however, the system becomes an insulator for U>0. We also obtain the specific heat and entropy for both the metallic and insulating regimes. Our analytic work reproduces the key results obtained by numerical method in infinite dimensions.

Mott-Hubbard transition in infinite dimensions

Marcelo J. Rozenberg, X. Y. Zhang, Gabriel Kotliar

We present a solution of the Hubbard model at half filling in the limit of infinite dimensions which corresponds to the Mott-Hubbard insulating phase. We describe the metal-insulator transition between this regime and the Fermi-liquid regime. Our analysis is based on an analytic consideration and exact Monte Carlo simulations at low but finite temperatures.
