Renormalization of Many-Fermion Momentum-Space Distributions in Higher Random Phase Approximations

N. R. Werthamer, H. Suhl

The approach to the many-fermion problem known as the method of higher random phase approximations (RPA) is given a more rigorous formulation. It is shown that the previous heuristic procedures for evaluation of the second RPA are justified, in that expectation values of plane wave operators with respect to the true ground state may validly be replaced by their values in the unperturbed Fermi state. This property of momentum-space occupation renormalization is conjectured to hold also to higher orders of RPA than the second.

Screening and effective RPA-like charge susceptibility in the extended Hubbard model

Aiman Al-Eryani, Sarah Heinzelmann, Kilian Fraboulet +2 more

We generalize the recently introduced single-boson exchange formalism to nonlocal interactions. In the functional renormalization group application to the extended Hubbard model in two dimensions, we show that the flow of the rest function can be neglected up to moderate interaction strengths. We explore the physics arising from the interplay between onsite and nearest-neighbor interactions in various parameter regimes by performing a fluctuation diagnostics. Differently from the magnetic and superconducting susceptibilities, the charge susceptibility appears to be described by the random phase approximation (RPA). We show that this behavior can be traced back to cancellations in the renormalization of the density fermion-boson coupling.

Bosonic Treatment of Pairing Correlations in a Solvable Many-Level Model

D. Gambacurta

We discuss two extensions of RPA based on a boson formalism and report on some applications within an exactly solvable many‐level pairing model. By making use of a Marumori‐type mapping procedure, we preliminary define the boson image of the fermion operators of interest and, in particular, of the model Hamiltonian. This includes two and four‐boson terms. We therefore construct renormalized RPA‐type equations in correspondence with different expansions of the boson operators. The approximate calculations are compared with the exact ones and with those obtained within RPA and Self Consistent RPA. We find that it is possible to improve considerably upon RPA by still keeping the formalism simple enough to be applied in more realistic cases without a too serious computational effort.
