Abstract

By combining a coherent state with fields from a number of parametric down-conversion processes, we are able to generate arbitrary $N$-photon entangled states, including the maximally entangled photon-number state or the so-called NOON state $(\ensuremath{\mid}N,0⟩+\ensuremath{\mid}0,N⟩)$. This is achieved through destructive quantum interference for the cancellation of the unwanted states.

Generation of three-photon entangled state by quantum interference between a coherent state and parametric down-conversion

Farbod Shafiei, P. Srinivasan, Z. Y. Ou

Three-photon entangled states such as a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state can be produced by mixing a weak coherent state with parametric down-conversion. Quantum interference between the two states is responsible for the cancellation of unwanted photon states. Two schemes of interference are considered and both are shown to produce the entangled state.

An Easy Road to High NOON

Yaron R. Silberberg

‘High-NOON’ states were generated by multiphoton interference of ‘quantum’ down-converted light with a ‘classical’ coherent state. Super-resolving phase measurements with up to five entangled photons were demonstrated with a visibility higher than obtainable without entanglement.

Heralded Generation of a Three-Photon N00N State

Heonoh Kim, Hee Su Park, Sang-Kyung Choi

A heralded three-photon NOON state is generated from two pairs of photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). The measured four-photon coincidences reveal fringes three times finer than single-photon interference.

Projection measurement of the maximally entangled N -photon state for a demonstration of the N -photon de Broglie wavelength

Fang‐Wen Sun, Z. Y. Ou, Guang‐Can Guo

We construct a projection measurement process for the maximally entangled $N$-photon state [the NOON state $(\ensuremath{\mid}N,0⟩+\ensuremath{\mid}0,N⟩)∕\sqrt{2}$] with only linear optical elements and photodetectors. This measurement process will give null result for any $N$-photon state that is orthogonal to the NOON state. We examine the projection process in more detail for $N=4$ by applying it to a four-photon state from type-II parametric down-conversion. This demonstrates an orthogonal projection measurement with a null result. This null result corresponds to a dip in a generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer for four photons. We find that the depth of the dip in this arrangement can be used to distinguish a genuine entangled four-photon state from two separate pairs of photons. We next apply the NOON state projection measurement to a four-photon superposition state from two perpendicularly oriented type-I parametric down-conversion processes. A successful NOON state projection is demonstrated with the appearance of the four-photon de Broglie wavelength in the interference fringe pattern.
