Performance of Cavity-Parametric Amplifiers, Employing Kerr Nonlinearites, in the Presence of Two-Photon Loss

Bernard Yurke, Eyal Buks

Two-photon loss mechanisms often accompany a Kerr nonlinearity. The kinetic inductance exhibited by superconducting transmission lines provides an example of a Kerr-like nonlinearity that is accompanied by a nonlinear resistance of the two-photon absorptive type. Such nonlinear dissipation can degrade the performance of amplifiers and mixers employing a Kerr-like nonlinearity as the gain or mixing medium. As an aid for parametric-amplifier design, the authors provide a quantum analysis of a cavity parametric amplifier employing a Kerr nonlinearity that is accompanied by a two-photon absorptive loss. Because of their usefulness in diagnostics, we obtain expressions for the pump amplitude within the cavity, the reflection coefficient for the pump amplitude reflected off of the cavity, the parametric gain, and the intermodulation gain. Expressions by which the degree of squeezing can be computed are also presented. Although the focus here is on providing aids for the design of kinetic-inductance parametric amplifiers, much of what is presented is directly applicable to analogous optical and mechanical amplifiers

Non-classical Properties of Non-degenerate Parametric Amplifiers and Oscillators with Pump Depletion and Non-homogeneous Losses Using the Wigner Representation

Jesús Martínez-Linares, P. Garcia-Fernandez

The squeezing properties of non-degenerate parametric amplification and oscillation with pump depletion and non-homogeneous absorption losses are studied. A method based in the Wigner representation is used which allows one, within a linearization scheme, to derive directly the Langevin equations for the involved optical fields from their quantum Heisenberg equations. Non-homogeneous absorption losses for the three beams are included in order to analyse the sensitivity of the squeezing spectra to the asymmetry of the losses. Intracavity squeezing spectra are calculated within this method both below- and above-threshold regimes. Special attention is given to the squeezing properties of the phase sum and amplitude difference of the correlated beams and amplitude of a single beam above threshold, where the role of loss asymmetry and pump losses is analysed in detail.

Practical Limits to Single-Mode Vacuum Squeezing with a SNAIL Parametric Amplifier

Theodore Shaw, Debsuvra Mukhopadhyay, Zhuoqun Hao +4 more

We characterize single-mode vacuum squeezing generated by a SNAIL Parametric Amplifier (SPA) operated under conditions representative of practical sensing and qubit-readout experiments. Motivated by prior expectations that Kerr-induced distortion limits squeezing in degenerate parametric amplifiers, we studied squeezing as a function of external flux and pump power to explore operating points where Kerr nonlinearity is theoretically minimized. We find that for squeezing operation at a fixed frequency, Kerr varied by about a factor of two and the achievable squeezing showed no significant dependence on Kerr. Rather than Kerr, the squeezing is dominated by internal resonator loss and insertion loss in the microwave chain as confirmed by theoretical modeling. These results indicate that, in practical SPAs, reducing loss, rather than suppressing Kerr, is the primary route to improved squeezing performance.
