Transformation of the spatial spectrum of optical radiation in parametric processes

Abstract

An investigation was made of the transformation of the spatial spectrum of optical radiation as a result of passage through an excited nonlinear medium. Experiments confirmed that, under certain conditions, this medium reemitted the energy of a plane wave of the incident radiation in the form of side spatial frequencies, whose spectrum corresponded to the autocorrelation function of the spatial spectrum of the pump radiation. Two models of parametric processes were used to account for the observed effect. The effect should be useful in investigations of spatially modulated radiation traveling across a phase-distorting medium.

Possibility of compensation of nonlinear phase distortions by parametric radiation converters

É S Voronin, Valery V. Ivakhnik, Vera M. Petnikova +2 more

The example of Gaussian beams is used in considering the possibility of compensation of nonlinear phase distortions in wavefront reversal systems by means of degenerate parametric processes. The necessary correction of the wavefront is achieved by using spatially modulated pump radiation beams. A suitably corrected reversed wave reconstructs the wavefront of the original signal after passing for the second time through the distorting medium.

The parametric Doppler effect in a medium with Lorentz dispersion

N. N. Rosanov

The frequency conversion under the parametric Doppler effect, which occurs when weak probe radiation reflects off from a refractive index inhomogeneity induced in a nonlinear medium by intense pumping, has been analyzed. Under these conditions, the frequency dispersion of the medium is assumed to correspond to the single Lorentz oscillator model. It is shown that the presence of resonance and a spectral range forbidden for propagation may lead to a complex Doppler effect, where the incident radiation is single-frequency but the reflected radiation consists of two or three monochromatic waves, one of which has a phaseconjugated wavefront.

Emission of a spatially modulated resonant medium excited with superluminal velocity

Mikhail V. Arkhipov, Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Yu. A. Tolmachev

Specific characteristics of the radiation of a resonant medium excited by an ultrashort light pulse propagating through the medium with a superluminal velocity are considered. The medium is assumed to consist of identical linear harmonic oscillators with a spatial density periodically modulated along the direction of propagation of the superluminal excitation. The field of radiation of the resonant medium under these conditions is calculated. It is shown that, under the superluminal excitation, the radiation spectrum of the medium shows, along with the fundamental frequency of the oscillators, new frequencies that depend on the spatial frequency of the distribution of oscillators and on the angle of observation. Possible application of the effect is discussed.

Spectral-temporal effects in resonant harmonic generation in gases

A. Z. Zhmudskii, A. M. Steba, V. L. Strizhevskiǐ

A theoretical investigation is made of unsteady quasiresonant optical third-harmonic generation in a gaseous nonlinear medium pumped by amplitude-modulated pulses of constant collimated radiation. It is shown that two effective unsteadiness mechanisms exist: wave unsteadiness, associated with the difference between the propagation velocities of the pump and harmonic waves, and local unsteadiness caused by the finite relaxation time of the appropriate nonlinear component of the polarization of the medium. In spectral terms these correspond to the resonant dispersion of the phase matching and the dispersion of the nonlinear polarizability of the medium, respectively. The output pulse profile is determined and the influence of the main parameters on its profile is analyzed. The stimulated emission spectrum is also studied for conditions when the pump field is a steady-state random Gaussian process.

Propagation of spatially inhomogeneous radiation in nonlinear resonant media

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Michail G. Galushkin, E M Zemskov

A theoretical study is made of the influence of diffraction by self-induced amplitude gratings on propagation of spatially inhomogeneous radiation in nonlinear resonant media. Dependences of the gain and absorption, and also of the distortion of the spatial spectrum on the parameters of the medium and radiation are determined. It is shown that interfering radiation is amplified and absorbed under saturation conditions less strongly than is spatially homogeneous radiation.

Propagation of spontaneous radiation in the medium of an optical amplifier

M. V. Sviridov, V T Skorik

An investigation is made of the spatial filtering of spontaneous radiation by the active medium in a traveling-wave optical amplifier. It is shown that in the high-gain case this radiation is described satisfactorily by a spherical wave whose effective source is located in the front of the amplifier. The influence of refraction is estimated as a function of the wave frequency.
