THE t-J AND FRUSTRATED HEISENBERG MODELS: A STATUS REPORT ON NUMERICAL STUDIES

Elbio R. Dagotto

Published Apr 1, 1991• 60 citations
Publisher

Abstract

Recent numerical work on the t-J model and the frustrated spin-[Formula: see text] Heisenberg antiferromagnet is reviewed. Lanczos results are mainly discussed but other methods are also mentioned. Static and dynamical properties of one and more holes in the t-J model are presented. The current active search for nontrivial ground states of the frustrated Heisenberg model is summarized. It is concluded that numerical methods are providing useful information in the study of these models.

NUMERICAL STUDIES OF STRONGLY CORRELATED ELECTRONIC MODELS

Elbio R. Dagotto

Recent numerical work on strongly correlated electronic models using the Lanczos approach is reviewed. In particular static and dynamical properties of the Hubbard, t—J (with one, two and more holes) and the spin-½ Heisenberg antiferromagnet are presented. An attempt to summarize the current active search for nontrivial ground states of the frustrated Heisenberg model is made. Numerical methods like the Lanczos technique are providing useful information in the study of these models.

High Tc superconductors: Numerical studies of the Hubbard model

Elbio R. Dagotto

Recent numerical work on strongly correlated electronic models using the Lanczos approach is reviewed. In particular, static and dynamical properties of the Hubbard and t–J models are presented attempting to make a connection with experiments. We conclude that numerical methods like the Lanczos technique are providing useful information in the study of these models.

The spin- 1/2 Heisenberg star with frustration: numerical versus exact results

Johannes Richter, A Voigt

We study a spin- 1/2 Heisenberg model H=J 1 Sigma i=2 N S 1 S i +J 2 Sigma i=2 N S i S i+1 ; J 1 , J 2 >or=0 (Heisenberg star) which may be considered either as an essential structure element of a lattice with frustration or, alternatively, as an antiferromagnetic linear chain with a perturbation. We discuss general relations for the energy eigenvalues, the eigenstates as well as the spin correlation of the system in dependence on J 2 /J 1 . The correlation function (S 1 S i ) scales with 1/Z, where Z =N-1 is the number of nearest neighbours i of the central spin 1. In the mean-field limit (Z to infinity ) (S 1 S i ) goes to -0.25 for small J 2 /J 1 , but vanishes for strong frustration J 2 /J 1 . Adding exact numerical results for N=5, 7, ..., 23 we discuss the ground-state phase diagram, in particular, the ground-state spin correlations versus J 2 /J 1 . Analysing the spin correlation of frustrated and non-frustrated stars we suggest an upper bound -0.25 for the ground-state correlator (S i S j )0 of two antiferromagnetically interacting spins i and j in a non-frustrated Heisenberg spin- 1/2 antiferromagnet. We argue that any measured nearest-neighbour spin correlation (S i S j )0 larger than this bound indicates of frustration in quantum spin Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

Zero-temperature properties of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet: A numerical study

Elbio R. Dagotto, Adriana Moreo

Using a modified Lanczos method we have studied the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model (at zero temperature) with lattices up to 24 sites. The ground-state and first-excited-state energies are evaluated. We show that the model is gapless in the thermodynamic limit in agreement with recent Monte Carlo simulations. Accurate results for the ``square ladder'' are also presented showing that this model is massive. The finite-size dependence of the results is discussed. In addition, we calculate the energy of a resonating-valence-bond state on finite lattices and its overlap with the exact ground state.

Correlation functions of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model using a modified Lanczos method

Eduardo R. Gagliano, Elbio R. Dagotto, Adriana Moreo +1 more

Using a modified Lanczos algorithm, we study the correlation functions in the ground state of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. We obtain numerical results for rings up to 24 sites. There are no indications of the anomalous behavior of these correlation functions recently observed in chains with 16 sites. We also present a pedagogical description of the hashing technique which is an efficient algorithm for searching and storage purposes.

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with anisotropic nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor coupling

William J. Massano, Janice D. Prie, Jay D. Mancini

A modified Lanczos method has been used to study the ground-state properties of a frustrated one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The ground-state energy as well as all two-particle spin-spin correlation functions are obtained for a 16-site lattice. Both the relative couplings and anisotropies for nearest and next-nearest neighbors are varied.
