Diagrammatical analysis of laser-switched collision processes

Ting K. Yee, M. C. Gower

We have used a diagrammatic approach first developed for nonlinear optical calculations of the density operator to obtain expressions for the transition probability in various laser-switched collision processes. Not only do these diagrams considerably simplify the algebra involved in such calculations, but they also afford a clear visualization of the interaction. In particular, pair absorption, laser-switched Raman scattering, and collisionally enhanced hot luminescence and four-wave mixing processes are considered.

Collisions and half-collisions with lasers

N. K. Rahman, Carla Guidotti

Merging two subfields, collisions and spectroscopy, this book presents the latest research proposals, innovative experiments and fresh ideas. Topics considered include radiative collision induced electron continuum-continuum scattering; models of laser-induced chemical reactions; experimental studies of laser-induced ionizing collisions; laser photodissociation of Na/sub 2/ + ions produced by laser resonant ionization of Na vapor; steady-state electron-atom collision in a laser field; conditions for the observation of the predicted splitting of the laser assisted electron impact of the differential cross section of atoms; transitions between resonances; some proposals for experiments; above-threshold multiphoton ionization; observability of optical collisions in the frequency and the time domain; laser switched collisions - a diagrammatical approach; polarization of atomic fluorescence excited by molecular photodissociation; multiphoton selective excitation; on the role of chaotic dynamics with many basins of attraction; predissociation in a strong electromagnetic field; theory of double resonance; and coherent excitation of polyatomic molecules up to highly excited vibrational states by laser light.

Ultracold 87Rb ground-state hyperfine-changing collisions in the presence and absence of laser light

S. D. Gensemer, P. L. Gould, Paul J. Leo +2 more

We have measured the rate of hyperfine-changing collisions between ground-state ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in a magneto-optical trap. Using a population switching technique, we directly measure the rate of these collisions in both the presence and absence of near-resonant trap laser light. We see a dramatic enhancement of the collision rate by the light and observe that, in the absence of the light, the rate increases with increasing temperature. There is consistency between this latter measured rate at temperatures below $\ensuremath{\sim}100$ $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{K}$ and theoretical calculations constrained by other recent experiments.
