Abstract

Using exact diagonalization techniques, we study one dynamical hole in the two-dimensional t-J and Hubbard models on a square lattice including a next-nearest-neighbor hopping t'. We present the phase diagram in the parameter space (J/t,t'/t), discussing the ground-state properties of the hole. At J=0, a crossing of levels exists at some value of t' separating a ferromagnetic from an antiferromagnetic ground state. For nonzero J, at least four different regions appear where the system behaves like an antiferromagnet or a (not fully saturated) ferromagnet. We study the quasiparticle behavior of the hole, showing that for small values of \ensuremath{\Vert}t'\ensuremath{\Vert} the previously presented string picture is still valid. We also find that, for a realistic set of parameters derived from the Cu-O Hamiltonian, the hole has momentum (\ensuremath{\pi}/2,\ensuremath{\pi}/2), suggesting an enhancement of the p-wave superconducting mode due to the second-neighbor interactions in the spin-bag picture. Results for the t-t'-U model are also discussed with conclusions similar to those of the t-t'-J model. In general we found that t'=0 is not a singular point of these models.

Two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping

H. Q. Lin, J. E. Hirsch

We study the magnetic properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor (t) and next-nearest-neighbor (${t}_{2}$) hopping and on-site repulsion U. We first calculate the mean-field phase diagram as a function of band filling and U. Because of the Van Hove singularity in the density of states, we find a ferromagnetic phase extending to zero U for certain band filling. For the half-filled band case, antiferromagnetism sets in at a finite value of U if ${t}_{2}$\ensuremath{\ne}0. We study the behavior of spin-spin correlation functions for small lattices of up to N=64 atoms using Monte Carlo simulations, as well as exact diagonalization for N=4. Our results show enhanced ferromagnetic correlations in some regions, but apparently no ferromagnetic long-range order. In the half-filled case, our numerical results are consistent with a nonzero critical U. For a non-half-filled band our results suggest that there is no long-range order.

Role of next-nearest-neighbor hopping in thet-t’-Jmodel

Takami Tohyama, Sadamichi Maekawa

A next-nearest-neighbor hopping t' in the t-t'-J model has a different sign between the hole- and electron-doped systems of high-${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ cuprates: t'0 for the hole-doped system and t'>0 for the electron-doped system. We show that the sign is responsible for the remarkable difference of antiferromagnetic (AF) phases between the two systems. To reveal this and clarify the role of t', we examine magnetic excitations of the t-t'-J model by employing exact diagonalization techniques for 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 and \ensuremath{\surd}18 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} \ensuremath{\surd}18 lattices. In the low-doping region (two-hole case of the \ensuremath{\surd}18 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} \ensuremath{\surd}18 lattice), AF spin correlations are stabilized for the case of t'>0, i.e., electron-doping case, but not for the case of t'0. In the high-doping region (four-hole case of the 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 lattice and more) magnetic excitations are mainly controlled by the geometry of the Fermi surface of the noninteracting system.

Dynamical pair susceptibilities in thet-Jand Hubbard models

Elbio R. Dagotto, José A. Riera, A. P. Young

We study dynamical properties of two holes in the t-J, t-${\mathit{J}}_{\mathit{z}}$, and Hubbard models using exact diagonalization techniques on small clusters. For the three models we found that the ground state of two holes has d-wave symmetry. Studying the dynamical d-wave pairing susceptibility at zero momentum, we observed a quasiparticle-like peak at the bottom of the spectrum in a broad region of parameter space. The lowest-energy p-wave state is close in energy to the d-wave ground state, and they both behave qualitatively similarly, while the lowest-energy states of the s-wave and extended-s-wave subspaces have higher energies and present no quasiparticle peak. The ground-state energy of two holes in the t-J model scales with J as a power law. Binding energies for different symmetries as well as dynamical properties for nonzero momentum are also discussed.

Binding of holes in the Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping

José A. Riera

We study the two-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hoppings and its related strong-coupling effective Hamiltonian by exact diagonalization. We found that the binding energy of holes tends to be smaller than with nearest neighbors only. However, the tendency towards phase separation is reduced by increasing the next-nearest-neighbor hopping. By studying pairing correlations, we found that the mode is strongly enhanced when the second-neighbor interactions are turned on.

Strongly correlated electronic systems with one hole: Dynamical properties

Elbio R. Dagotto, Robert Joynt, Adriana Moreo +2 more

The spectral functions of one hole in the t-J and one-band Hubbard models are calculated using exact diagonalization techniques on small lattices. Results for the t-${\mathit{J}}_{\mathit{z}}$ model are also presented. For the t-J model we found that there is a quasiparticle at the bottom of the hole spectrum with an energy well approximated by ${\mathit{E}}_{\mathit{h}}$=-3.17+2.83${\mathit{J}}^{0.73}$ (for 0.1\ensuremath{\le}J\ensuremath{\le}1.0, t=1) on a 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 lattice. The rest of the spectrum is not incoherent: We identified at least two other peaks following a similar power-law behavior with J. We speculate that the J dependence of the results can be explained by a model where the hole is trapped in a confining potential as in the Ising limit. The bandwidth of the hole is linear in J in the region 0.1\ensuremath{\le}J\ensuremath{\le}0.4 although a power-law behavior is not excluded. The spectral weight of the quasiparticle grows like ${\mathit{J}}^{0.5}$ in the same region. We present new analytical results in the large J/t limit to understand the motion of the hole: In perturbation theory it can be shown that the momentum of the hole at large J/t is k=(\ensuremath{\pi},\ensuremath{\pi}) changing to k=(\ensuremath{\pi}/2,\ensuremath{\pi}/2) at intermediate J/t in agreement with numerical and spin-waves results. We show analytically and numerically that the bandwidth of the quasiparticle is of order t in the large J/t limit. This result corresponds to a spin-liquid state. The one-hole spectral function of the Hubbard model is obtained for lattices with 8 and 10 sites. A quasiparticle is also observed in this case. The bandwidth and the relation with the t-J model are discussed and a comparison with recent Monte Carlo results is made. We also review and extend previous results for the ground-state properties of the t-J model.

Ferromagnetism in one-dimensional Hubbard model induced by the next-nearest-neighbor hopping at electron density 3/2

Yuan-Yuan Yang, Jian Zhang, Hui Pan +1 more

Ferromagnetism in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping is explored by using the exact-diagonalization method in a small cluster and the equation-of-motion method in the thermodynamic limit with electron density n = 3/2. With these two complementary methods, it is found that an intermediate value of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitude t1 tends to stabilize the fully polarized ferromagnetic state under the condition that the on-site coulomb interaction U is sufficiently large in our model. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is presented in the t1—U plane.
