We investigate numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, including an on-site interaction U and a nearest-neighbor interaction V. We focus on the ground state phases of the model in the $V\ensuremath{\gg}U$ region, where previous studies have suggested the possibility of dominant superconducting pairing fluctuations before the system phase separates at a critical value
V=VPS. Using quantum Monte Carlo methods on lattices much larger than in previous Lancz\"os diagonalization studies, we determine the boundary of phase separation, the Luttinger-liquid correlation exponent ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}},$ and other correlation functions in this region. We find that phase separation occurs for V significantly smaller than previously reported. In addition, for negative U, we find that a uniform state reenters from phase separation as the electron density is increased towards half filling. For
V<VPS, our results show that superconducting fluctuations are not dominant. The system behaves asymptotically as a Luttinger liquid with ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}<1,$ but we also find strong low-energy (but gapped) charge-density fluctuations at a momentum not expected for a standard Luttinger liquid.
We studied all possible ground states, including supersolid (SS) phases and phase separations of hard-core- and soft-core-extended Bose-Hubbard models with fixed boson densities by using the Gutzwiller variational wave function and the linear programming method. We found that the phase diagram of the soft-core model depends strongly on its transfer integral. Furthermore, for a large transfer integral, we showed that an SS phase can be the ground state even below or at half filling against the phase separation. We also found that the density difference between nearest-neighbor sites, which indicates the density order of the SS phase, depends strongly on the boson density and transfer integral.
Exact diagonalisations of the extended two-band Hubbard model are performed. In the insulating regime it is shown that the nearest-neighbour copper-oxygen repulsion, V , leads to Frenkel excitons in the charge transfer gap at values of V of the order of copper-oxygen hybridisation, t . In the metallic regime it is shown that the static charge transfer and density-density correlation functions diverge as a function of V , indicating a charge transfer instability and phase separation. This is accompanied by a softening of the q → 0 mode of the dynamic correlation functions which is associated with the excitonic excitations responsible for the superconducting correlations observed in the proximity of the phase separation boundary described by C. Vermeulen et al. (C. Vermeulen et al. , Europhys. Lett. , 28 (1994) 653).
