Engineering of Schrödinger cat states by a sequence of displacements and photon additions or subtractions

Abstract

A method to generate Schrödinger cat states in free propagating optical fields based on the use of displaced states (or displacement operators) is developed. Some optical schemes with photon-added coherent states are studied. The schemes are modifications of the general method based on a sequence of displacements and photon additions or subtractions adjusted to generate Schrödinger cat states of a larger size. The effects of detection inefficiency are taken into account.

Detector Imperfections of Schrödinger Cat Generation with Ancillary Coherent States

Y. Takahashi, Shuichiro Inoue, Shinichi Komatsu

Measurement-induced nonlinear operation in linear optics is a promising technique to realize quantum computation and communications. Such an operation has been demonstrated via the generation of photon-subtracted squeezed states, namely, Schrödinger-cat states. Nielsen and Mølmer have proposed an efficient scheme to generate the cat states with larger amplitudes relative to previous experimental results. We present a simple experimental implementation of their scheme and analyze it while considering experimental imperfections. Our study indicates that the current photon detection technology meets the conditions necessary for their operation.

Generation of Schrödinger cat states by generalized photon subtraction

Kan Takase, Jun-Ichi Yoshiawa, Warit Asavanant +2 more

We propose a high-rate generation method of optical Schrödinger cat states [1] . More than a decade, the standard method of cat-state generation has been photon subtraction from squeezed vacuum states [2] . Its constraints on experimental parameters, however, limit the generation rate. We overcome the problem by considering photon-number measurement in one mode of arbitrary two-mode Gaussian states, which we call "generalized photon subtraction". Analysis of such a general situation is challenging, but we analytically derive an efficient condition by describing the state-generation process using wave functions. Supposing realistic experimental conditions, the generation rate of cat states with large-amplitude (| α| ≥ 2) is improved by multiple orders from the conventional photon subtraction. Our proposal would open a way for quantum error correction and coherent-state-based quantum computing.

Expanding possibilities of quantum state engineering and amplifying optical Schrodinger kitten state

Evgeny V. Mikheev, Sergey A. Podoshvedov, Nguyen Ba An

We demonstrate an optical method to engineer optical Schrödinger cat states (SCSs) of large size beta ranging from beta=2 to beta=3 with high fidelity close to 0.99. Our approach uses the alpha-representation of the SCSs in infinite Hilbert space with base in terms of displaced number states characterized by the displacement amplitude alpha. An arbitrary alpha-representation of SCSs enables manipulation of the amplitudes in wider ranges of parameters, greatly expanding the possibilities for generation of desired nonclassical states. The optical scheme we consider is quite universal for implementation of the conditioned states close to SCSs with use of linear-optics elements and detectors projecting unitarily transformed input states onto the target one. Different states (e.g., number state or coherent state or superposed state) are selected as the input to the optical scheme. In particular, an input small-size Schroodinger kitten state can give rise to an output large-size SCS.

Conditional Production of Schroedinger Cat States with Inefficient Photon Detection

Austin P. Lund, Hyunseok Jeong, Timothy C. Ralph +1 more

It is shown that a linear superposition of two macroscopically distinguishable optical coherent states (Schroedinger's cat state) can be generated using a single photon source and simple all-optical operations. Weak squeezing on a single photon, beam mixing with an auxiliary coherent state, and photon detecting with imperfect threshold detectors are enough to generate a free propagating optical cat state with a large coherent amplitude ($\\alpha>2$) and high fidelity ($F>0.99$). In contrast to all previous schemes to generate such a state, our scheme does not need photon resolving measurements nor Kerr-type nonlinear interactions.

Generation of heralded optical `Schroedinger cat' states by photon-addition

Yi-Ru Chen, Hsien-Yi Hsieh, Jingyu Ning +7 more

Optical "Schrödinger cat" states, the non-classical superposition of two quasi-classical coherent states, serve as a basis for gedanken experiments testing quantum physics on mesoscopic scales and are increasingly recognized as a resource for quantum information processing. Here, we report the first experimental realization of optical "Schrödinger cats" by adding a photon to a squeezed vacuum state, so far only photon-subtraction protocols have been realized. Photon-addition gives us the advantage of using heralded signal photons as experimental triggers, and we can generate "Schrödinger cats" at rates exceeding $8.5 \times 10^4$ counts per second; at least one order of magnitude higher than all previously reported realizations. Wigner distributions with pronounced negative parts are demonstrated at down to -8.89 dB squeezing, even when the initial squeezed vacuum input state has low purity. Benchmarking against such a degraded squeezed input state we report a maximum fidelity of more than 80% with a maximum cat amplitude of $|α| \approx 1.66$. Our experiment uses photon-addition from pairs, one of those photons is used for monitoring, giving us enhanced control; moreover the pair production rates are high and should allow for repeated application of photon-addition via repeat-stages.

Efficient production of large-size optical Schrödinger cat states

Evgeny V. Mikheev, Alexander S. Pugin, Dmitry Kuts +2 more

We present novel theory of effective realization of large-size optical Schrödinger cat states, which play an important role for quantum communication and quantum computation in the optical domain using laser sources. The treatment is based on the α-representation in infinite Hilbert space which is the decomposition of an arbitrary quantum state in terms of displaced number states characterized by the displacement amplitude α. We find analytical form of the α-representation for both even and odd Schrödinger cat states which is essential for their generation schemes. Two schemes are proposed for generating even/odd Schrödinger cat states of large size |β| (|β| ≥ 2) with high fidelity F (F ≈ 0.99). One scheme relies on an initially offline prepared two-mode entangled state with a fixed total photon number, while the other scheme uses separable photon Fock states as the input. In both schemes, generation of the desired states is heralded by the corresponding measurement outcomes. Conditions for obtaining states useful for quantum information processing are established and success probabilities for their generation are evaluated.
