Generation and coherent control of even-order harmonics driven by intense frequency-comb and cavity-mode fields inside a fsEC

Abstract

We present a theoretical investigation of the multiphoton resonance dynamics driven by intense frequency-comb and cavity-mode fields inside a femtosecond enhancement cavity (fsEC). The many-mode Floquet theorem is employed to provide a nonperturbative and exact treatment of the interaction between a quantum system and laser fields. The quasienergy structure driven by the frequency-comb laser field is modified by coupling the cavity-mode field and the multiphoton resonance processes between modified quasienergy states, resulting in the generation of even-order harmonics. The high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from a two-level system driven by the laser fields can be coherently controlled by tuning the laser parameters. In particular, the tuning intensity of the cavity-mode field allows one to coherently control the HHG power spectra without changing the absolute positions of comb frequencies.

Many-mode Floquet theoretical approach for coherent control of multiphoton dynamics driven by intense frequency-comb laser fields

Sang-Kil Son, Shih‐I Chu

We extend the many-mode Floquet theorem (MMFT) for the investigation of multiphoton resonance dynamics driven by intense frequency-comb laser fields. The frequency comb structure generated by a train of short laser pulses can be exactly represented by a combination of the main frequency and the repetition frequency. MMFT allows non-perturbative and exact treatment of the interaction of a quantum system with the frequency-comb laser fields. We observe simultaneous multiphoton resonance processes between a two-level system and frequency-comb laser. The multiphoton processes can be coherently controlled by tuning the laser parameters such as the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) shift. In particular, high-order harmonic generation shows immense enhancement by tuning the CEP shift, due to simultaneous multiphoton resonances.

Resonant enhancement of generation of harmonics

Igor A. Ivanov, Anatoli S. Kheifets

We develop a Floquet based formalism which describes a process of the generation harmonics of in an atom driven by a laser field. Using this formalism, we show that several harmonics are strongly enhanced in the spectrum when the laser frequency is such that a multiphoton resonance occurs between the initial state and a quasienergy state. We illustrate these findings by a numerical calculation of the harmonics generation in the potassium and rubidium atoms driven by a laser in the near-infrared energy range. The present formalism is also applicable when the initial state is a coherent superposition of several field-free atomic states.

Generation and control of optical frequency combs using cavity electromagnetically induced transparency

Jiahua Li, Ye Qu, Rong Yu +1 more

We explore theoretically the generation and all-optical control of optical frequency combs (OFCs) in photon transmission based on a combination of single-atom-cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Here an external control field is used to form the cavity dark mode of the CQED system. When the strengths of the applied EIT control field are appropriately tuned, enhanced comb generation can be achieved. We discuss the properties of the dark mode and clearly show that the formation of the dark mode enables the efficient generation of OFCs. In our approach, the comb spacing is determined by the beating frequency between the driving pump and seed lasers. Our demonstrated theory may pave the way towards all-optical coherent control of OFCs using a CQED architecture.

Toward quantum frequency combs: Boosting the generation of highly nonclassical light states by cavity-enhanced parametric down-conversion at high repetition rates

Alessandro Zavatta, Valentina Parigi, Marco Bellini

We demonstrate the generation of multiphoton quantum states of light by cavity-enhanced parametric down-conversion in the high-repetition-rate pulsed regime. An external enhancement cavity resonant with the spectral comb of modes of a mode-locked pump laser provides a coherent buildup of the pump intensity and greatly enhances the parametric gain without sacrificing its high repetition rate and comb structure. We probe the parametric gain enhancement by the conditional generation and tomographic analysis of two-photon Fock states. Besides its potential impact for efficiently generating highly nonclassical or entangled multiphoton states in many existing experimental setups, this scheme opens exciting perspectives toward the combination of quantum and comb technologies for enhanced measurements and advanced quantum computation protocols.

Quantum-optical model for the dynamics of high-order-harmonic generation

Ákos Gombkötő, Attila Czirják, Sándor Varró +1 more

We investigate a two-level atom in the field of a strong laser pulse. The resulting time-dependent polarization is the source of a radiation the frequency components of which are essentially harmonics of the driving field's carrier frequency. The time evolution of this secondary radiation is analyzed in terms of the expectation values of the photon-number operators for a large number of electromagnetic modes that are initially in the vacuum state. Our method is based on a multimode version of the Jaynes-Cummings-Paul model and can be generalized to different radiating systems as well. We show that, after the exciting pulse, the final distribution of the photon numbers is close to the conventional (Fourier-transform-based) power spectrum of the secondary radiation. The details of the high-order-harmonic spectra (HHG spectra) are also analyzed; for many-cycle excitations a clear physical interpretation is given in terms of the Floquet quasienergies. A first step towards the determination of the photon statistics of the high-order-harmonic modes reveals states with slightly super-Poissonian distribution.

Coherent control of high-order harmonic generation in a two-level atom driven by intense two-colour laser fields

Shangqing Gong, Zhongyang Wang, Si-de Du +1 more

We present the most prominent features in two-colour coherent control of high-order harmonic generation using a strongly driven two-level atom model, which are known to generate high harmonics as well as hyper-Raman lines with a plateau and a cut-off. Furthermore, for one laser field case, we find, when the hyper-Raman lines are located at the position of the high harmonics, that the high harmonics are strongly enhanced due to the interference effect between the high harmonics and the hyper-Raman lines. Within these conditions, by combining the laser field with another much weaker laser field, we show plentiful and strong high harmonics in the light spectrum of the driven atomic system.
