Universality in long-range interacting systems: The effective dimension approach

Andrea Solfanelli, Nicolò Defenu

Dimensional correspondences have a long history in critical phenomena. Here, we review the effective dimension approach, which relates the scaling exponents of a critical system in d spatial dimensions with power-law decaying interactions r^{d+σ} to a local system, i.e., with finite-range interactions, in an effective fractal dimension d_{eff}. This method simplifies the study of long-range models by leveraging known results from their local counterparts. While the validity of this approximation beyond the mean-field level has been long debated, we demonstrate that the effective dimension approach, while approximate for non-Gaussian fixed points, accurately estimates the critical exponents of long-range models with an accuracy typically larger than 97%. To do so, we review perturbative renormalization-group (RG) results, extend the approximation's validity using functional RG techniques, and compare our findings with precise numerical data from conformal bootstrap for the two-dimensional Ising model with long-range interactions.

Renormalization group for the φ4 theory with long-range interaction and the critical exponent η of the Ising model

Raphael Goll, Peter Kopietz

We calculate the critical exponent η of the D-dimensional Ising model from a simple truncation of the functional renormalization group flow equations for a scalar field theory with long-range interaction. Our approach relies on the smallness of the inverse range of the interaction and on the assumption that the Ginzburg momentum defining the width of the scaling regime in momentum space is larger than the scale where the renormalized interaction crosses over from long range to short range; the numerical value of η can then be estimated by stopping the renormalization group flow at this scale. In three dimensions our result η=0.03651 is in good agreement with recent conformal bootstrap and Monte Carlo calculations. We extend our calculations to fractional dimensions D and obtain the resulting critical exponent η(D) between two and four dimensions. For dimensions 2≤D≤3 our result for η is consistent with previous calculations.

The critical behaviour of the 1-dimensional XY model with power law decay long range interactions

Masahiro Takamoto, Yoshinori Muraoka, Toshihiro Idogaki

We discuss the critical behaviour of the 1-dimensional classical XY model with power law decay long range interactions by using Monte Carlo simulation. It has been predicted by renormalization group calculation that the critical behaviour changes with the power of interactions. From the simulation result of temperature dependence of the specific heat, we confirm that the system shows the critical behaviour of the mean field type and the non-trivial long range order. We also estimate the critical exponent η for the system with the inverse square long range interactions, and by using the phenomenological renormalization group plot, we confirm the 'Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT)-like' transition which has been predicted by the spin wave calculations.
