Abstract

In variational calculations with harmonic oscillator wavefunctions as trial bases, the transformation coefficients that relate harmonic oscillator wavefunctions in two different sets of internal coordinates are convenient to the evaluation of some matrix elements. Here, we present the explicit expression of these transformation coefficients for five-body systems. These transformation coefficients can be collected in a matrix according to the quantum number N of harmonic oscillator shell and can be programmed for arbitrary N.

Common generating functions of complete harmonic oscillator wave functions and transformation brackets in D dimensions

Lorea Chaos‐Cador, E. Ley‐Koo

Abstract The separability of the Schrödinger equation for harmonic oscillators in D dimensions and in different coordinate systems (Cartesian, circular, spherical) makes possible the construction of common generating functions for the complete harmonic oscillator wave functions in the corresponding dimensions and coordinates. Explicit forms of such generating functions and their series expansions are presented, and one of their applications is illustrated through the evaluation of transformation brackets. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Transformation bracket for 2D hyperspherical harmonics and its applications to few-anyon problems

W. Y. Ruan, Bao Cheng-guang

The transformation bracket of hyperspherical harmonics with different sets of hyperspherical coordinates as arguments has been derived for an arbitrary number of particles with arbitrary masses in two space dimensions. The solution of the four-anyon problem is given as an example to illustrate its applications.

Transformation properties of wave functions of a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator

I. E. Mazets

A transformation formula for wave functions of type $$\overset{\lower0.5em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\smile}$}}{l}$$ , where ψn is the eigenfunction of a harmonic oscillator for the nth energy level, was found for an arbitrary rotation of the (x 1, x 2) Cartesian system. By way of example, matrix elements for contact interaction of two particles in an external harmonic potential field were calculated.

Variational Calculation with Harmonic-Oscillator Eigenfunctions

Valdir C. Aguilera-Navarro, Rosa Ma. Méndez V.

Variational calculations play an important role in quantum mechanics, particularly in determining the ground-state energy of physical systems. Didactic examples in which one can see how the exact energy and wave function are approached by using a family of trial functions are not very numerous. An example was given in a recent book [M. Moshinsky, The Harmonic Oscillator in Modern Physics: From Atoms to Quarks (Gordon and Breach, New York, 1969)] which discusses the ground state of the hydrogen atom using as trial wave function a linear combination of harmonic-oscillator states. In the present paper we carry out a similar analysis for the ground state of a particle of mass m in a three-dimensional square-well potential. We discuss not only the approach to the exact energy when we vary the frequency and the number of oscillator states but also analyze the overlap of the exact and variational wave functions and compare the exact and approximate form factors.

Diabatic Hamiltonian matrix elements made simple

K. Hagino, G. F. Bertsch

With a view to applying the generator coordinate method to large configuration spaces, we propose a simple approximate formula to compute diabatic many-body matrix elements without having to evaluate two-body interaction matrix elements. The method is illustrated with two analytically solvable Hamiltonians based on the harmonic oscillator.
