Bell’s inequalities and quantum field theory. I. General setting

Abstract

Bell’s inequalities are briefly presented in the context of order-unit spaces and then studied in some detail in the framework of C*-algebras. The discussion is then specialized to quantum field theory. Maximal Bell correlations β(φ,𝒜(𝒪1), 𝒜(𝒪2)) for two subsystems localized in regions 𝒪1 and 𝒪2 and constituting a system in the state φ are defined, along with the concept of maximal Bell violations. After a study of these ideas in general, properties of these correlations in vacuum states of arbitrary quantum field models are studied. For example, it is shown that in the vacuum state the maximal Bell correlations decay exponentially with the product of the lowest mass and the spacelike separation of 𝒪1 and 𝒪2. This paper is also preparation for the proof in Paper II [S. J. Summers and R. Werner, J. Math. Phys. 28, 2448 (1987)] that Bell’s inequalities are maximally violated in the vacuum state.

Bell’s inequalities and quantum field theory. II. Bell’s inequalities are maximally violated in the vacuum

In the context of the study of Bell’s inequalities carried out in Paper I [J. Math. Phys. 28, 2440 (1987)], it is proven that Bell’s inequalities are maximally violated in the vacuum state by suitable spacelike separated observables for both Bose and Fermi free quantum field theories.

Generic Bell correlation between arbitrary local algebras in quantum field theory

Rob Clifton

Abstract There are many senses in which the phenomenon of Bell correlation, originally discovered and investigated in the context of elementary nonrelativistic quantum mechanics (Bell 1987, Clauser et al. 1969), is ‘generic’ in quantum field theory models. For example, it has been shown that every pair of commuting nonabelian von Neumann algebras possesses some normal state with maximal Bell correlation (Summers 1990; see also Landau 1987b). Moreover, in most standard quantum field models, all normal states are maximally Bell correlated across spacelike separated tangent wedges

On Bell's Inequalities in Faithful Normal States

Yuichiro Kitajima

Bell's inequalities in algebraic quantum field theory have been studied by Landau, Summers and Werner, and Halvorson and Clifton. Halvorson and Clifton showed that many normal states on local algebras associated with space-like separated bounded open regions violate Bell's inequalities under the the axioms of algebraic quantum field theory. In the present paper, I point out that many faithful normal states on local algebras associated with space-like separated bounded open regions violate Bell's inequalities under the axioms of algebraic quantum field theory.

Bell Correlations in Quantum Field Theory

Guo Chuan Thiang

Bell correlations are the hallmark of quantum non-locality, and a rich context for analysing them is provided by the algebraic approach to quantum field theory (AQFT): the basic idea is to associate with each bounded region O of Minkowski spacetime an algebra A(O) of operators, of which a self-adjoint element P ∈ A(O) represents a physical quantity pertaining to that part of the field system lying in O, that is measurable by a procedure confined to O. The violation of Bell inequalities in AQFT is known to be "generic", as regards the choices of regions O, and of quantities P, and of states. Furthermore, they are typically "maximal" and "indestructible" in a sense that can be made mathematically precise. The prospects for “peaceful coexistence” between quantum non-locality and relativity theory’s requirement of no action-at-a-distance are also explored. The purpose of this Essay is to review the developments in these areas.

Maximal violation of Bell's inequalities for algebras of observables in tangent spacetime regions

Stephen J. Summers, Reinhard F. Werner

We continue our study of Bell's inequalities and quantum field theory. It is shown in considerably broader generality than in our previous work that algebras of local observables corresponding to complementary wedge regions maximally violate Bell's inequality in all normal states. Pairs of commuting von Neumann algebras that maximally violate Bell's inequalities in all normal states are characterized. Algebras of local observables corresponding to tangent double cones are shown to maximally violate Bell's inequalities in all normal states in dilatation-invariant theories, in free quantum field models, and in a class of interacting models. Further, it is proven that such algebras are not split in any theory with an ultra-violet scaling limit On montre que les algebres d'observables locales correspondant a des domaines en coins violent au maximum les inegalites de Bell dans tous les etats normaux.

Bell's Inequalities, Relativistic Quantum Field Theory and the Problem of Hidden Variables

Miklós Rédei

Based partly on proving that algebraic relativistic quantum field theory (ARQFT) is a stochastic Einstein local (SEL) theory in the sense of SEL which was introduced by Hellman (1982b) and which is adapted in this paper to ARQFT, the recently proved maximal and typical violation of Bell's inequalities in ARQFT (Summers and Werner 1987a–c) is interpreted in this paper as showing that Bell's inequalities are, in a sense, irrelevant for the problem of Einstein local stochastic hidden variables, especially if this problem is raised in connection with ARQFT. This leads to the question of how to formulate the problem of local hidden variables in ARQFT. By giving a precise definition of hidden-variable theory within the operator algebraic framework of quantum mechanics, it will be argued that the aim of hidden-variable investigations is to determine those classes of quantum theories whose elements represent a statistical content that cannot be reduced in a given way. In some particular way to be stated, a proposition will be stated which distinguishes quantum field theories whose statistical content cannot be reduced without violating some relativistic locality principle.
