Quasiparticle model of deviations in the spin-flop phase of a one-dimensional spin1/2Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Abstract

The ground state in the spin-flop phase is investigated by means of numerical calculations of the static correlation functions for short chains of up to 12 atoms. In the light of these results the authors suggest a picture in which the deviations form extended quasi-particles with an effective long range repulsive interaction. The model gives reasonable results for the magnetisation as a function of field and for the spin wave spectrum in the spin-flop phase.

Numerical Research on Quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Spin System

Dongfang Chen

The magnetic order of a special quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin model with numerical density matrix renormalization groups is discussed. The ground energy per unit cell, spin correlation function and the spin gap are calculated. Results show that the quasi-one-dimensional spin system has magnetic long-rang order under ground state and the spin correlation on chain is short-rang.

Finite cell calculations of an antiferromagnetic spin chain with long-range interactions

Robert S. Botet, Rémi Jullien

The ground state properties of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin- 1 / 2 chain with interactions varying as (distance) -p are investigated from finite cell calculations. The gap between the ground state and the first excited state as well as the end-to-end spin correlation function have been calculated for finite open chains up to 14 spins and 12 spins respectively. Aided by first-order perturbation calculations near p=0, the authors can extrapolate the gap in the thermodynamic limit, and they find that the gap vanishes for every p not=0. From the analysis of the spin correlation function they find that long-range order exists for p<1 and does not exist for p>2. The existence of long-range order in the range 1<p<2 remains an open question.

Spin Fluctuation Spectrum of One-Dimensional Spin 1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet in an Applied Magnetic Field

Norikazu Ishimura, Hiroyuki Shiba

The magnetic-field effect on the transverse and longitudinal spin fluctuation spectra is studied for one-dimensional spin 1/2 isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We perform an exact calculation of dynamical correlation functions for finite-spin chains. The result shows that a large portion of the intensity is concentrated on the des Cloizeaux-Pearson spectrum, which was studied previously for finite-magnetic-field case by the authors (Prog. Theor. Phys. 57 (1977), 1862). This observation is combined with general considerations on dynamical correlation functions. We compare the present theory with Heilmann et al.'s neutron experiment on CuCl2·2NC5D5. A study is made also on the magnetic-field dependence of the static correlation functions. The longitudinal static correlation function in particular shows interesting wave-vector dependence, which is worth investigating experimentally.

Study of Interacting Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Spin-1/2 and 1 Chains

Debasmita Maiti, Dayasindhu Dey, Manoranjan Kumar

Haldane conjectures the fundamental difference in the energy spectrum of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAF) of the spin S chain is that the half-integer and the integer S chain have gapless and gapped energy spectrums, respectively. The ground state (gs) of the HAF spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains have a quasi-long-range and short-range correlation, respectively. We study the effect of the exchange interaction between an HAF spin-1/2 and an HAF spin-1 chain forming a normal ladder system and its gs properties. The inter-chain exchange interaction J⊥ can be either ferromagnetic (FM) or antiferromagnetic (AFM). Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we show that in the weak AFM/FM coupling limit of J⊥, the system behaves like two decoupled chains. However, in the large AFM J⊥ limit, the whole system can be visualized as weakly coupled spin-1/2 and spin-1 pairs which behave like an effective spin-1/2 HAF chain. In the large FM J⊥ limit, coupled spin-1/2 and spin-1 pairs can form pseudo spin-3/2 and the whole system behaves like an effective spin-3/2 HAF chain. We also derive the effective model Hamiltonian in both strong FM and AFM rung exchange coupling limits.

Quantum Spin Chains And Luttinger Liquids With Junctions : Analytical And Numerical Studies

Vinod Chandra

We present in this thesis a series of studies on the physical properties of some one dimensional systems. In particular we study the low energy properties of various spin chains and a junction of Luttinger wires. For spin chains we specifically look at the role of perturbations like frustrating interactions and dimerisation in a nearest neighbour chain and the formation of magnetisation plateaus in two kinds of models; one purely theoretical and the other motivated by experiments. In our second subject of interest we study using a renormalisation group analysis the effect of spin dependent scattering at a junction of Luttinger wires. We look at the physical effects caused by the interplay of electronic interactions in the wires and the scattering processes at the junction. The thesis begins with an introductory chapter which gives a brief glimpse of the ideas and techniques used in the specific problems that we have worked on. Our work on these problems is then described in detail in chapters 25. We now present a brief summary of each of those chapters. In the second chapter we look at the ground state phase diagram of the mixed-spin sawtooth chain, i.e a system where the spins along the baseline are allowed to be different from the spins on the vertices. The spins S1 along the baseline interact with a coupling strength J1(> 0). The coupling of the spins on the vertex (S2) to the baseline spins has a strength J2. We study the phase diagram as a function of J2/J1 [1]. The model exhibits a rich variety of phases which we study using spinwave theory, exact diagonalisation and a semi-numerical perturbation theory leading to an effective Hamiltonian. The spinwave theory predicts a transition from a spiral state to a ferrimagnetic state at J2S2/2J1S1 = 1 as J2/J1 is increased. The spectrum has two branches one of which is gapless and dispersionless (at the linear order) in the spiral phase. This arises because of the infinite degeneracy of classical ground states in that phase. Numerically, we study the system using exact diagonalisation of up to 12 unit cells and S1 = 1 and S2 =1/2. We look at the variation of ground state energy, gap to the lowest excitations, and the relevant spin correlation functions in the model. This unearths a richer phase diagram than the spinwave calculation. Apart from revealing a possibility of the presence of more than one kind of spiral phases, numerical results tell us about a very interesting phase for small J2. The spin correlation function (for the spin1/2s) in this region have a property that the nextnearest-neighbour correlations are much larger than the nearest neighbour correlations. We call this phase the NNNAFM (nextnearest neighbour antiferromagnet) phase and provide an understanding of this phase by deriving an effective Hamiltonian between the spin1/2s. We also show the existence of macroscopic magnetisation jumps in the model when one looks at the system close to saturation fields. The third chapter is concerned with the formation of magnetisation plateaus in two different spin…

Fermionic Spinons in Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain

Tetsuo Matsui

The antiferromagnetic s =1/2 Heisenberg spin model in one dimension is analyzed by a variational Hamiltonian in terms of Jordan-Wigner fermions. Some results are compared with those of modified bosonic spin-wave theory. The fermionic quasi-particles (spinons) reproduce the “spin-wave” excitations of des Cloizeaux and Pearson with good accuracy.
