Symmetry-conserving variational dynamics: Application to quasispin systems

Abstract

A time-dependent variational procedure is proposed that possesses the same constants of the motion as the exact many-body Schr\"odinger dynamics. The class of trial wave functions is larger than the manifold of Slater determinants that supports the time-dependent Hartree-Fock dynamics. These wave functions can be regarded as superpositions of the eigenfunctions of the conserved observable of interest and the variational equations display the usual parametric structure, with properly admixed energy gradients and the symplectic metric tensor. In an application to the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, significant improvements over the usual mean-field or determinantal dynamics can be achieved.NUCLEAR STRUCTURE Mean field symmetry breaking; symmetry restoration; nondeterminantal wave function; time-dependent variational principle; parametric equations of motion; mean energy metric tensor; canonical coordinates; quasispin models; comparison with time-dependent Hartree-Fock dynamics.

Quasispin dynamics beyond the Bloch sphere: Exact versus time-dependent Hartree-Fock evolution

Hernán Gustavo Solari, E. Susana Hernández

We examine the complementary types of motion induced by the time-dependent mean field and the related residual interaction in the frame of quasispin systems. The time-dependent Hartree-Fock law of motion is used to generate an instantaneous basis, where the residual interaction induces transitions that deviate the exact motion with respect to the simple Slater determinant evolution. Geometric images of both kinds of dynamics are given and definite time scales are extracted for the validity of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock description, its second order correction, and the building up of a noticeable relative polarization of the exact wave function. It is seen that in addition to the time-dependent Hartree-Fock motion over the Bloch sphere, the exact dynamics contains an "inwards" component as well as additional rotations.NUCLEAR STRUCTURE Time-dependent Hartree-Fock; moving basis; residual interaction; complementary motions; quasispin systems; Slater determinant; time scales; rotations and nonrotations on Bloch sphere; polarization.

A TIME-DEPENDENT MULTI-DETERMINANT APPROACH TO NUCLEAR DYNAMICS

G. Puddu

We propose a Time-Dependent Multi-Determinant (TDMD) approach to the description of the time evolution of the nuclear wave functions. We use the Dirac variational principle to derive the equations of motion using as ansatz for the nuclear wave function a linear combination of Slater determinants. We prove explicitly that the norm and the energy of the wave function are conserved during the time evolution. This approach is a generalization of the time-dependent Hartree–Fock method to many Slater determinants. We apply this approach to a case study of 6 Li using the N3LO interaction renormalized to four major harmonic oscillator shells. We solve the TDMD equations of motion using Krylov subspace methods of Lanczos type. As an application, we discuss the isoscalar monopole strength function.

Generalized variational principle for the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations for a Slater determinant

Hans-Jörg Kull, Dieter Pfirsch

The time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations are derived from a variational principle for the general N-body action of a Slater determinant of single-electron orbitals. The variational principle generalizes commonly used variational treatments based on reduced two-body actions. The self-consistent field equations are found to contain time-dependent corrections to the standard mean-field interactions. Their physical significance is discussed and a time-dependent phase shift to the Slater determinant is obtained that properly accounts for the total interaction energy in the mean-field approach.

Formally exact quantum variational principles for collective motion based on the invariance principle of the Schrödinger equation

Abraham Klein, Toshio Marumori, Tsutomu Une

The time-dependent variational principle of the Schr\"odinger equation is applied to a formally exact solution of the Schr\"odinger equation whose variational elements are operators which define a collective subspace of the many-body system under study. This generalizes the procedure employed to derive time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory. Four distinct formally exact time-independent variational principles, including several familiar forms, are derived. Application to a class of exactly soluble models, studied in the vibrational regime, illustrates the different modes of implementation of two of the principles. The general theory of large amplitude collective motion is derived. It is shown that the principles can be applied equally well, using either boson or fermion pair degrees of freedom. Some aspects of the relation to the semiclassical limit are discussed.[NUCLEAR STRUCTURE Time-dependent variational principle for collective motion. Invariance principle of Schr\"odinger equation. Time-dependent Hartree-Fock dynamics and phase transition in Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model

Kit-Keung Kan, Peter C. Lichtner, Maria Dworzecka +1 more

The time-dependent Hartree-Fock solutions of the two-level Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model are studied by transforming the time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations into Hamilton's canonical form and analyzing the qualitative structure of the Hartree-Fock energy surface in the phase space. It is shown that as the interaction strength increases these time-dependent Hartree-Fock solutions undergo a qualitative change associated with the ground state phase transition previously studied in terms of coherent states. For twobody interactions stronger than the critical value, two types of time-dependent Hartree-Fock solutions (the "librations" and "rotations" in Hamilton's mechanics) exist simultaneously, while for weaker interactions only the rotations persist. It is also shown that the coherent states with the maximum total pseudospin value are determinants, so that time-dependent Hartree-Fock analysis is equivalent to the coherent state method.NUCLEAR STRUCTURE Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, TDHF, transformation of TDHF equations to Hamilton's canonical form, coherent states, ground state phase transition.

Irreversible dynamics of quasispin systems

E. Susana Hernández, Hernán Gustavo Solari

It is shown that nuclear matter described by quasispin or pseudospin operators may exhibit irreversible behavior, in the sense of modern kinetic theory. With the help of the group-contraction technique, a harmonic oscillator can be associated to the many-body system and it is seen that in the standard Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model the ground-state phase transition gives rise to a significant change in the spectral properties of the characteristic operators. This fact makes room for the introduction of the microscopic operators of irreversible dynamics. Their meaning and the consequences of their existence are examined and it is seen that the time evolution of the quasispin arrangement closely resembles the approach to equilibrium of a macroscopic system.NUCLEAR STRUCTURE Operators of irreversible Hamiltonian dynamics; quasispin nuclear matter; group contraction, Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model; ground-state phase transition; entropy; irreversible approach to equilibrium.
