Onefold photoelectron-counting statistics for non-Gaussian light: scattering from an arbitrary number of weak scatterers

Abstract

The onefold photoelectron-counting statistics (e.g., probability distribution and moments) are obtained when the physical system under study contains an arbitrary number of independent weak (i.e., nonuniform phase) scatterers. The results are generalized by letting the number of scatterers be random and be governed by a Poisson distribution.

Onefold photoelectron counting statistics for non-Gaussian light: Scattering from polydispersive suspensions

Richard G. Barakat, Julian Blake

Onefold photoelectron counting distributions are evaluated for coherent light scattered by an ensemble of particles. The ensemble contains, in general, a random number of nonidentical particles. Expressions are obtained for the probability density function and the moments of the scattering intensity. These results reduce to those of Pusey, Schaefer, and Koppel when the particles are identical. Photocount probabilities are also evaluated. The variance, coefficient of skewness, and coefficient of excess are evaluated when the probability density of the intensity contributed by each scatterer is specified by a narrow Gaussian distribution centered about the deterministic mean.

Photoelectron Counting Statistics of Laser Light Scattered by Very Dilute Solution

Manabu Yoshikawa, Norihito Suzuki, Tatsuro Suzuki

The photon counting statistics of light is studied, in which the various types of photon counting distribution can be represented by Nakagami'sm-distribution. To investigate this theoretical utility we have measured the photon counting distribution of laser light scattered by a very dilute solution in which non-Gaussian statistics appear. The comparison is also made by the factrial moment between the experimental value and theoretical one. The experimental distribution is in agreement with the theoretical distribution.

Generating Function of the N-fold Photoelectric Counting Distribution for Gaussian Light

Cyrus D. Cantrell

An exact expression is obtained for the generating function of the N-fold (i.e., N-detector) photoelectron counting distribution for cross-spectrally pure Gaussian light, in terms of the onefold generating function. It is assumed that the counting times at the different detectors are all equal, but not necessarily short compared to the coherence time of the light. In cases where the onefold generating function can be calculated, a closed formula for the N-fold generating function can be obtained.

Probability-density-functional description of photoelectron statistics

Masahito Ueda

We show that time distributions of photoelectrons can best be described by a generalized probability-density function which we call the probability-density functional. The probability-density functional gives complete information about the statistical properties of any random-point process, and provides the most natural definitions of the ensemble average and generating functional of a quantity distributed in time. Using this functional, we develop a new approach to photoelectron statistics that systematically relates various joint probability distributions of photoelectrons to one another and to the corresponding generating functionals. We demonstrate that this method can be used to derive previously obtained results and we use it to obtain new results. In particular, the amount of information about the statistical properties of photoelectrons that is contained in a probability distribution can be obtained by comparing the corresponding generating functional with the probability-density functional. Further, we examine time derivatives of the probability distribution for the number of counts and develop new relationships for probability distributions of triggered counting. Finally, we apply our results to obtain an ``inverse'' relationship between photon bunching (antibunching) and super-Poisson (sub-Poisson) statistics.

Onefold photoelectron-counting statistics of mixtures of thermal and coherent radiation

Richard G. Barakat

We consider onefold photoelectron-counting statistics, for arbitrary counting times, when the wave field on the detector is a mixture of thermal light of a specified spectral profile (incoherent component) and a harmonic signal (coherent component). The probability density function of the time-integrated intensity W(Ω) is obtained from the inverse Laplace transform of the moment-generating function by the Dubner–Abate algorithm. The corresponding probability distribution of the detected photoelectrons, P(m), is then evaluated directly by numerical integration of W(Ω). Numerical results for W(Ω) and P(m) have been obtained when the thermal line shape is Lorentzian for both the homodyne situation (coherent line coincides with the mean frequency of the thermal spectral profile) and the heterodyne situation (coherent line is now off center with respect to the mean frequency of the thermal spectral profile).

Photon statistics of partially polarized Gaussian light

Tadashi Aoki, Katsumi Sakurai

Statistical properties of partially polarized Gaussian light were studied experimentally for degrees of polarization $P$ from 0.03 to 1 by a standard technique of photon counting. The Gaussian light with an arbitrary degree of polarization was obtained from Rayleigh scattering of orthogonally polarized laser beams. The factorial moments up to sixth order of the photoelectron distribution were measured with an arbitrary temporal and spatial coherence. After corrections were taken for the experimental conditions, the theoretical values of these factorial moments were compared with the experimental results. It is shown that the theoretical predictions were quantitatively well verified by the present measurements. The microscopic process is discussed from the standpoint of the light scattering system used in the present measurements, and it is shown that the orthogonally polarized components of the scattered light observed are statistically independent.
