Coherent propagation effect of incoherent light

Norio Morita, Kenji Torizuka, Tatsuo Yajima

The coherent propagation phenomenon of incoherent light through a resonant medium was experimentally demonstrated in the subpicosecond time region, using Na atoms and the light from an imperfectly mode-locked cw dye laser. The coherence spike with a 0.35-psec width in the cross-correlation profile between the propagated incoherent light and the initial light develops the same specific oscillatory structure as seen in the propagation of a weak coherent subpicosecond pulse. A theoretical analysis was also performed, and the experimental results are in considerably good agreement with the calculated ones.

Influence of incoherent pumping on slow light propagation in rubidium atomic vapor

Andrey B. Matsko, Dmitry Strekalov, Anatoliy A. Savchenkov +1 more

We theoretically study influence of incoherent pumping on slow light propagation in rubidium atomic vapor. The pumping reduces the residual unwanted absorption of the light in the medium on one hand, and destroys the atomic coherence on the other. We show that the pumping allows to increase dynamic range of the system compared with the usual slow light system.

Optimizing the image projection of spatially incoherent light from a multimode fiber

Ken Deng, Zhongchi Zhang, Huaichuan Wang +2 more

We study the spatially incoherent light generated by a multimode fiber(MMF) in the application of image projection designed for the ultracold-atom experiments. Inspired by previous half-analytic methods concerning the incoherent light, here a full-numerical model is established to provide more quantitative descriptions, and part of results is compared with experiments. Particularly, our model about the MMF is also compatible with light propagation in free space. Based on this, we study both the intrinsic speckle and the perturbation robustness of a MMF light field, under the influence of light propagation and fiber parameters. We point out several guidelines about choosing the suitable MMF in creating a spatially incoherent light source, which is useful in the context of the ultracold-atom experiments associating with the optical potential projection.
