Multi-dimensional quantum systems based on integrated optics and pulsed light

Christine Silberhorn

Photonic networks with many modes and quantum input states have been proposed for various quantum applications. We present three approaches to overcome current limitations for their implementation: non-linear integrated quantum optics, temporal modes and time-multiplexing.

Generation, characterization, and manipulation of fiber-coupled entangled photons

Kim Fook Lee, Gregory S. Kanter

Systems for generating, manipulating, and measuring entangled photons are described. Quantum state tomographies are recorded with one of the entangled photons distributed over fiber. A high speed, low loss quantum switch for 1550 nm photons is demonstrated, which can manipulate photons for processing or multiplexing.

Benjamin Brecht, Vahid Ansari, Andreas Christ +3 more

Photonic quantum information applications based on time-frequency (TF) modes of ultrafast quantum states of light hold the promise of exploiting the benefits of high-dimensional information encoding and, at the same time, easy integrability into existing communication networks. Here we present tools and waveguide devices for the controlled generation, complete characterization and mode-selective manipulation and detection of ultrafast quantum states with tailored TF mode structure.

Two-spin-multiplexed optoacoustic light storage in chiral photonic crystal fiber

Xinglin Zeng, Linqiao Gan, Jesús Humberto Marines Cabello +2 more

The ability to coherently store and manipulate optical information across multiple degrees of freedom is a central requirement for scalable quantum information processing and multidimensional quantum computing. Although polarization- and space-division multiplexings have substantially increased the capacity of classical optical systems, their extension to coherent and reconfigurable photonic memories remains a key challenge. Here, we demonstrate a two-spin-channel-multiplexed photonic memory based on chiral stimulated Brillouin scattering in a chiral photonic crystal fiber. Exploiting the intrinsic preservation of circular polarization in the chiral photonic crystal fiber, left- and right-circularly polarized modes serve as two orthogonal and independent storage channels. Multiple optical data pulses can be selectively or simultaneously stored and retrieved by simply controlling the polarization states of the write-read pulses. The storage time is continuously tunable, and the underlying Brillouin process preserves coherence and channel orthogonality. The result establishes chiral Brillouin scattering as an effective mechanism for spin-channel-multiplexed optoacoustic light storage, providing a promising route toward multidimensional photonic memories based on multiple optical degrees of freedom. It also opens new opportunities for classic and quantum information processing, reconfigurable quantum networks, and hybrid light–matter interfaces based on coherent acoustic excitations.

Propagation of temporal mode multiplexed optical fields in fibers: influence of dispersion

Wen Zhen Zhao, Nan Huo, Liang Cui +2 more

The field-orthogonal temporal modes (TM) of electromagnetic fields form a new framework for quantum information. A lot of efforts have been made to develop the tools for photonic quantum information processing in TM framework. However, the distribution of temporally multiplexed quantum states over long distance optical fibers has not been realized yet. As a first step toward long distance distribution of TMs, we study fourth-order interference and show how the dispersion influence the field spectrum by launching a pulsed field in different temporal modes into a M-Z interferometer with unbalanced dispersion induced by transmission fibers in two arms. The investigation is useful for further investigating the distribution of temporally multiplexed quantum states in fiber network.
