Abstract

The intensity of fluorescence spectral lines of Rb atoms in the region of 350–1110 nm is measured in eletrodeless discharge lamp. The population ratio between the excited states is calculated according to the spontaneous transition probabilities with rate equations. At the same time, the population density of energy level is also obtained. The results provide the potential applications of electrodeless discharge lamp in atomic filter and optical frequency reference at higher excited states without a pumping laser.

Population Distribution of Excited States in Cs Electrodeless Discharge Lamp

Chuanwen Zhu, Zhiming Tao, Mo Chen +4 more

We measure the intensity of fluorescence spectral lines of Cs atoms in an electrodeless discharge lamp from visible light to the near-infrared region of 400–1000 nm. To build an excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter, the population ratios between the excited states are calculated by rate equations and the spontaneous transition probabilities. The electrodeless discharge lamp with populations in the excited states can be used to realize the frequency stabilization reference for lasers at multiwavelength and the excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter for submarine communication applications in blue—green wavelengths to simplify the system.

The near-infrared spectra and distribution of excited states of electrodeless discharge rubidium vapour lamps

Qinqing Sun, Xin-Yu Miao, Sheng Rong-wu +1 more

The population ratio between the excited states of rubidium in the electrodeless discharge rubidium vapour lamp is calculated according to the near-infrared spectra in the region of 780–1550 nm. By using a 1529 nm laser, we measure the density of natural rubidium atoms at the 5P 3/2 level. The populations of different excited states are then clarified.

Laser 728 nm Spectroscopy of Electrodeless Discharge Rb Lamp

We mainly report the 728.0 nm transition between 7S 1/2 and 5P 1/2 laser spectroscopy of an electrodeless discharge Rb vapor lamp, which is the clock transition of a potential four-level active optical clock, once laser cooled and trapped Rb atoms are pumped by 359.2 nm laser. To realize this proposition, we study the linewidth and absorption characteristics of the 728.0 nm laser absorption spectrum of a rubidium electrodeless discharge vapor lamp with varying lamp temperature and rf driving power respectively, measured by an external cavity diode laser in a Littrow configuration. The measured 728.0 nm spectrum of a glass cell filled with Rb and Ar buffer gases in the electrodeless discharge Rb lamp based Faraday filter stabilized laser can be a heterodyne comparison reference for the weak power output of a possible cold Rb four-level active optical clock at 728.0 nm clock transition with laser cooled and trapped atoms. To the best of our knowledge, there has not been any research reported on Rb 728.0 nm laser spectroscopy in detail.

Applications of electrodeless discharge Rb vapor lamp for frequency stabilization of 1529 nm laser

Qinqing Sun, Xinyu Miao, Jingbiao Chen

Optical-optical double-resonance (OODR) Spectra for the 52P1/2−62S1/2and the 52P3/2−42D3/2,5/2transition of87Rb have been used for frequency stabilization in near-infrared region for many years. Though the method works well, it calls for locked 780nm lasers to pump Rb atoms into 52P3/2. We are trying to use an electrodeless discharge Rb vapor lamp to replace the complex locked pumping laser. The lamp's spectra show us that there are two spectral signals, 780nm and 795nm, are much larger than others. We are trying to make 52P3/2level populated by shining the lamp light into a Rb vapor cell. Meantime, the lamp could absorb 1529 nm laser most seriously when operating in red mode. The absorption signal with high SNR but with several hundred megahertz line-width is hopefully to be used to lock the 1529 nm laser directly without 780 nm laser. The advantage of the lamp used in the frequency stabilized system is to reduce the size and cost of 1.5 μm wavelength standard for optical communication application.
