Abstract

Abstract We investigate the arguments recently given by Jauch and Piron that quantal proposition systems form a complete atomic lattice. Our analysis shows that the reasoning of these authors can not establish the intended result.

Jauch–Piron states

We argue that a finite proposition system in the sense of Jauch and Piron that admits a unital set of states is necessarily purely classical. Based on this result, we investigate the extensibility of σ-additive states on projection lattices to all projections of a separable Hilbert space.
