PHASE BOUNDARY AND UNIVERSALITY OF THE TRIANGULAR LATTICE ANTIFERROMAGNETIC ISING MODEL

Abstract

Transfer matrix methods are used to locate accurate phase boundary of the triangular lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model in magnetic field. Universal quantities such as the central charge and the first few scaling dimensions are obtained along the phase boundary except near the zero field point where the crossover effect degrades convergence. Numerical results are fully consistent with the operator content of the 3-state Potts model indicating that whole phase boundary belongs to the 3-state Potts universality class.

Global phase diagram and six-state clock universality behavior in the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model with anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor coupling: Level-spectroscopy approach

Hiromi Otsuka, Yutaka Okabe, K. Nomura

We investigate the triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model with a spatially anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic coupling, which was first discussed by Kitatani and Oguchi. By employing the effective geometric factor, we analyze the scaling dimensions of the operators around the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition lines, and determine the global phase diagram. Our numerical data exhibit that two types of BKT-transition lines separate the intermediate critical region from the ordered and disordered phases, and they do not merge into a single curve in the antiferromagnetic region. We also estimate the central charge and perform some consistency checks among scaling dimensions in order to provide the evidence of the six-state clock universality. Further, we provide an analysis of the shapes of boundaries based on the crossover argument.

Triangular Ising model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a field

Xiaofeng Qian, Henk W. J. Blöte

The authors study the Ising model on the triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor couplings K(nn) , next-nearest-neighbor couplings K(nnn) >0 , and a magnetic field H . This work is done by means of finite-size scaling of numerical results of transfer matrix calculations, and Monte Carlo simulations. We determine the phase diagram and confirm the character of the critical manifolds. The emphasis of this work is on the antiferromagnetic case K(nn) <0 , but we also explore the ferromagnetic regime K(nn) >/=0 for H=0 . For K(nn) <0 and H=0 we locate a critical phase presumably covering the whole range -infinity< K(nn) <0 . For K(nn) <0 , H not equal 0 we locate a plane of phase transitions containing a line of tricritical three-state Potts transitions. In the limit H-->infinity this line leads to a tricritical model of hard hexagons with an attractive next-nearest-neighbor potential.

Antiferromagnetic Ising Model on a Triangular Lattice

Yukio Saitō, Kazuhiro Igeta

An antiferromagnetic Ising system on a triangular lattice is studied by means of a transfer matrix and the phenomenological scaling method. System consists of a semi-infinite strip and helical boundary conditions are imposed at the end of each row. At external magnetic fields h =0 and 6 J , where J is a nearest neighbor coupling constant, a unite residual entropy is obtained at the zero temperature. With a small field, specific heat is found to have two peaks; a high-temperature peak corresponding to the enhanced short-range order, and a low-temperature peak to the appearance of a long-range order. A phase diagram in h - T space is obtained by means of the phenomenological scaling, and agrees fairly well with the one obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. The main deficiency is the finite transition temperature at h =0, which may be due to a crossover to the XY-like phase transition.

EXACT BOUNDARY MAGNETIZATION OF THE LAYERED ISING MODEL ON TRIANGULAR AND HONEYCOMB LATTICES

Alessandro Pelizzola

In the present paper we extend a previous exact calculation of the boundary magnetization of the square lattice layered Ising model, based on a transfer-matrix effective-field technique, to the triangular lattice. The result is then further extended to the honeycomb lattice by means of a star-triangle transformation. Finally, the (11) boundary of the square lattice is analyzed as a particular case of the triangular and honeycomb lattices.

A Monte Carlo and renormalization group study of the Ising model with nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions on the triangular lattice

James N. Glosli, Michael Plischke

The Ising model with nearest and next nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions on the triangular lattice displays, for Jnnn/Jnn = 0.1, three phase transitions in different universality classes as the magnetic field is increased. We have studied this model using Monte Carlo and renormalization group techniques. The transition from the paramagnetic to the 2 × 1 phase (universality class of the Heisenberg model with cubic anisotropy) is found to be first order; the transition from the paramagnetic phase to the [Formula: see text] phase (universality class of the three state Potts model) is continuous; and the transition from the paramagnetic to the 2 × 2 phase (universality class of the four state Potts model) is found to change from first order to continuous as the field is increased. We have mapped out the phase diagram and determined the critical exponents for the continuous transitions. A novel technique, using a Landau-like free energy functional determined from Monte Carlo calculations, to distinguish between first order and continuous transitions, is described.

Phase diagram of the triangular-lattice Potts antiferromagnet

Jesper Lykke Jacobsen, Jesús Salas, Christian R Scullard

Abstract We study the phase diagram of the triangular-lattice Q -state Potts model in the real ( Q , v ) -plane, where v = e J − 1 is the temperature variable. Our first goal is to provide an obviously missing feature of this diagram: the position of the antiferromagnetic critical curve. This curve turns out to possess a bifurcation point with two branches emerging from it, entailing important consequences for the global phase diagram. We have obtained accurate numerical estimates for the position of this curve by combining the transfer-matrix approach for strip graphs with toroidal boundary conditions and the recent method of critical polynomials. The second goal of this work is to study the corresponding A p − 1 RSOS model on the torus, for integer p = 4 , 5 , … , 8 . We clarify its relation to the corresponding Potts model, in particular concerning the role of boundary conditions. For certain values of p , we identify several new critical points and regimes for the RSOS model and we initiate the study of the flows between the corresponding field theories.
