Instabilities leading to vortex lattice formation in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

Nicholas G. Parker, Rick van Bijnen, A. Martin

We present a comprehensive theoretical study of vortex lattice formation in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates confined by a rotating elliptical trap. We consider rotating solutions of the classical hydrodynamic equations and their response to perturbations, as well as time-dependent simulations. We discriminate three distinct, experimentally testable, regimes of instability: ripple, interbranch, and catastrophic. Under symmetry-breaking perturbations these instabilities lead to lattice formation even at zero temperature. While our results are consistent with previous theoretical and experimental results, they shed further light on lattice formation.

Hydrodynamic equation of a spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

Kazue Kudo, Yuki Kawaguchi

We introduce equations of motion for spin dynamics in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, written using a vector expressing the superfluid velocity and a complex scalar describing the magnetization. This simple hydrodynamical description extracts the dynamics of spin wave and affords a straightforward approach by which to investigate the spin dynamics of the condensate. To demonstrate the advantages of the description, we illustrate dynamical instability and magnetic fluctuation preference, which are expressed in analytical forms.

Splitting superfluid hydrodynamic equations and instability of solutions in the case of degenerate bosons

Владимир Иванович Цурков

Properties of solutions to superfluid hydrodynamic equations as applied to the degenerate Bose gas are considered. The equations are split into two independent pairs of equations. One pair is written for the normal component implies the instability of solutions, which manifests itself in the majorant catastrophe with respect to the total density. The case when the thermodynamic functions depend on the difference of the normal and superfluid velocities is also considered. In that case, the system is not split; however, the instability and the majorant catastrophe occur when the initial temperature tends to absolute zero.
