Abstract

On the basis of a vector model, the propagation of laser pulses under the conditions of a two-photon quasiresonance in the case of Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage through the resonance is studied with allowance for a diabatic character of the interaction. It is shown that the shape of a pulse propagating in a medium changes, the sweeping of its carrier frequency occurring concurrently. Special features of the spacetime evolution of the population difference in a two-photon transition and of the two-photon coherence during pulse propagation are analyzed. It is established that a complete population inversion and a maximum coherence may exist over a long length of the medium if the corresponding conditions are satisfied at the boundary. A new possibility for achieving a high coherence (close to a maximum value) is proposed.

Femtosecond Stark-Chirped Rapid Adiabatic Passage by Single Spectrally Shaped Pulse

Han-gyeol Lee, Hyosub Kim, Hanlae Jo +1 more

Complete population inversion of two-level atoms in a magneto-optical trap is demonstrated by off-resonant two laser pulses shaped from a single ultrafast laser pulse. The observed phenomenon is explained in the context of femto-second laser version of Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage.

Self-induced adiabatic rapid passage

D. Grischkowsky, M. M. T. Loy

We show that, by virtue of the linewidth reduction provided by counter-propagating beams, it is possible to use the optical Stark shift to sweep a two-photon resonance through the sum frequency of the applied light while simultaneously satisfying the conditions required for optical adiabatic rapid passage. Consequently, the application of a near-resonant pulse of light can result in complete population inversion of a two-photon transition.

Spatial evolution of short pulses under conditions of coherent population trapping

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, Ivan V. Timofeev

We study the features of spatial and temporal evolution of two powerful short different-wavelength laser pulses interacting with optical dense three-level Lambda-type medium under condition of coherent population trapping for the general case of unequal transition oscillator strengths. The pulses are simultaneously sent into an atom. The durations of probe and coupling pulses $T_{1,2}$ ($T_2>T_1$) are supposed to be shorter than all relaxation times in the medium. We present analytical and numerical solutions of the self-consistent set of coupled Schr\\"{o}dinger equations and reduced wave equations in adiabatic limit with taking into account the first non-adiabatic correction. The adiabaticity criterion with account of pulse propagation is studied. We find that propagation dynamics depends on the relationship between the transition oscillator strengths. It is shown that at the initial stage of propagation the envelopes of the pulses slightly change along the length of the medium. This distance can be large compared to one-photon resonant absorption length of the medium. Also it is possible a regime of complete reemitting of the probe pulse into the coupling one during propagation. A spatial evolution of the atomic Raman coherence is investigated in detail too.

Spatial-time evolution of population inversion under Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage and generation of anti-Stokes pulses

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, S. A. Myslivets

This study discusses potentials and features of a deep vacuum-ultraviolet generation of short pulses by the anti-Stokes stimulated Raman scattering (ASRS) based on the Stark chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP). In contrast to the nonlinear frequency mixing the ASRS do not require phase matching and permit to generate a widely tunable coherent radiation. As it will be shown, an advantage of this approach, in comparison with used earlier ones, is the complete population inversion on the length of an active medium.

Theory of deep ultraviolet generation at maximum coherence assisted by Stark-chirped two-photon resonance

S. A. Myslivets, A. K. Popov, Victor Kimberg +1 more

A scheme is analyzed for effcient generation of vacuum ultraviolet radiation through four-wave mixing processes assisted by the technique of Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage. These opportunities are associated with pulse excitation of laddertype short-wavelength two-photon atomic or molecular transitions so that relaxation processes can be neglected. In this three-laser technique, a delayed-pulse of strong oR-resonant infrared radiation sweeps the laser-induced Stark-shift of a two-photon transition in a such way that facilitates robust maximum two-photon coherence induced by the first ultraviolet laser. A judiciously delayed third pulse scatters at this coherence and generates short-wavelength radiation. A theoretical analysis of these problems based on the density matrix is performed. A numerical model is developed to carry out simulations of a typical experiment. The results illustrate a behavior of populations, coherence and generated radiation along the medium as well as opportunities of effcient generation of deep (vacuum) ultraviolet radiation.

Pulse pair propagation under conditions of induced transparency: adiabatic approximation

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, Ivan V. Timofeev

The features of spatial and temporal evolution of two short laser pulses propagating in three-level medium under conditions of coherent population trapping and adiabatic population transfer is investigated in adiabatic approximation. It is shown that in both cases pulses can penetrate into a medium at a distance considerably exceeding the length of linear absorption of a single weak probe pulse in absence of a coupling pulse at adjacent transition. The difference of spatial and temporal evolution of level populations in processes of coherent population trapping and adiabatic population transfer is demonstrated. Also we show that the concept of dressed-field pulses is consequence of Manley-Raw relation.
