Quantum coherent control of dynamic properties of double-dark-resonance atomic systems

Yue Niu

In this thesis, quantum coherent control of dynamic properties of double-dark-resonance atomic systems is pursued in detail. First we show our scheme for creating atomic coherent superposition states via the technique of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a Lambda-type four-level system. With the application of a control field, it is found that the presence of double dark states leads to two arbitrary coherent superposition states with equal amplitude but inverse relative phases, even though the condition of multiphoton resonance is not met. The suitable manipulation of the control field and detunings enables the proposed scheme to create any coherent superposition states one desired. Then, in the above mentioned double-dark-resonant system, a scheme for giant enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity is put forward. Compared with that generated in a single-dark-resonance system, the Kerr nonlinearity can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude with vanishing linear absorption. We attribute this dramatic enhancement to the interaction of dark resonances. As another possible means for enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity, spontaneously generated coherence is proposed. Meanwhile, a theoretical investigation is carried out in a five-level tripod system for obtaining a high efficiency double-channel four-wave-mixing process. By manipulating the intensity of the two coupling fields, the conversion efficiency of four-wave-mixing can be controlled.

Coexistence of four-wave, six-wave and eight-wave mixing processes in multi-dressed atomic systems

Yanpeng Zhang, Blake Anderson, Min Xiao

Two doubly dressing (parallel and nested processes) schemes are considered which generate co-existing four-wave mixing (FWM), six-wave mixing (SWM) and eight-wave mixing (EWM) processes in an open five-level atomic system. The coherent interaction between two dressing processes in nested type is much stronger than that in parallel type. The singly enhanced SWM and dually enhanced FWM channels can be opened at the same time. Such dramatic enhancements in high-order nonlinear optical processes result from the constructive interactions of double dark resonances. The giant third-, fifth- and seventh-order nonlinear responses with different signs can be obtained by using the coherent phase controls of the polarization beats between the FWM, SWM and EWM signals.

Controlling four-wave mixing and six-wave mixing in a multi-Zeeman-sublevel atomic system with electromagnetically induced transparency

Yigang Du, Yanpeng Zhang, Cuicui Zuo +8 more

We theoretically investigate the dually dressed electromagnetically induced transparency, and the multidressed four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes in an inverted-$Y$-type atomic system with Zeeman sublevels. The results show that the Zeeman degeneracy of the dark states can be lifted by the dressing field as its intensity is increased. Moreover, the derived analytical expressions indicate that one can, for example, selectively create secondary dark states on the multi-Zeeman-sublevel dark states (by tuning the coupling field), distinguish two different types of dark states generated in two FWM processes (by properly controlling the coupling field intensity), and selectively enhance multi-FWM signals coming from various paths consisting of split Zeeman sublevels (by tuning the dressing field). The SWM signals can be either enhanced or suppressed by controlling the dressing field.
