Pairing of holes in stacked layers

Abstract

We study the effective interaction between fermionic holons mediated by bosonic spinons in stacked layers described by the t-J model with a hopping coupling between the layers. This interaction is provided by the holon-spinon interaction beyond mean-field theory. The effective four-holon interaction drives (1) pure in-plane holon pairing; (2) holon pairing in one plane, provided that there is pairing in the other; and (3) interlayer holon pairing. The latter pairing does not lead to physical interlayer hole pairing. We discuss the influence of the Coulomb repulsion between the holons on the pairing picture that we have obtained.

Superconducting instability of the resonating-valence-bond state

V. N. Muthukumar

Assuming the low-energy excitations in the Cu-O planes to be spin-charge decoupled, we show explicitly that an interlayer coupling gives rise to processes that involve hopping of singlet bonds between adjacent layers, if the spinons are paired. On tracing out the spinons, we obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the holons. This turns out to be the model for superconducting holons proposed earlier by Wheatley, Hsu, and Anderson.

Effective holon-holon interaction in the resonating-valence-bond state

Y. R. Wang

The effective holon-holon interaction mediated by the spinon background is derived in the framework of the resonating-valence-bond model. The interaction is present only after the spinons undergo a transition to a spin superfluid state and is attractive for the holon Cooper pairs. The latter property of the holon-holon interaction gives further support to the conjecture that the two-dimensional Hubbard model by itself in the large-U limit could lead to superconductivity.

Boson Mean Field Theory of Effective Holon-Holon Interaction in the RVB Model

Yongjun Liu, Jinming Dong, Chang-De Gong

The RVB model is investigated by a mean field theory, in which the holon is expressed by a fermion operator, and the spinon by a boson operator. The effective holon-holon interaction by exchanging the spinons is derived for . It is found that the interaction is attractive.

Phases of Mott-Hubbard bilayers: Theoretical model

Jung Hoon Han, Chenglong Jia

A phase diagram of two Mott-Hubbard planes interacting with a short-range Coulomb repulsion is presented. Considering the case of equal amount of doping by holes in one layer as electrons in the other, a holon-doublon interlayer exciton formation is shown to be a natural consequence of Coulomb attraction. Quasiparticle spectrum is gapped and incoherent below a critical doping ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}$ due to the formation of excitons. A spin-liquid-insulator (SLI) phase is thus realized without the lattice frustration. The critical value ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}$ sensitively depends on the interlayer interaction strength. In the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model description of each layer with the $d$-wave pairing, ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}$ marks the crossover between SLI and $d$-wave superconductor. The SLI phase, despite being nonsuperconducting and charge gapped, still shows an electromagnetic response similar to that of a superfluid due to the exciton transport. Including antiferromagnetic order in the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model introduces magnetically ordered phases at low doping and pushes the spin-liquid phase to a larger interlayer interaction strength and higher doping concentrations.

Evaluation of the effective holon-holon interaction by the slave-fermion method

Yongjun Liu, Jinming Dong, Chang-De Gong

The effective holon-holon interaction by exchanging the spinons in the resonating-valence bond model is derived by the slave-fermion method. The authors found that the interaction is attractive for the holon Cooper pair. Complexity due to Bose condensation of the spinons at T=0 has been discussed.

Magnetic Order and Superconductivity in the Bosonic t-J Model of CP$^1$ Spinons and Doped Bosonic Holons

Koji Aoki, Kazuhiko Sakakibara, Ikuo Ichinose +1 more

We study the three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory of a CP$^1$ spinon (Schwinger boson) field and a Higgs field. It is a bosonic $t$-$J$ model in slave-particle representation, describing the antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg spin model with doped bosonic holes expressed by the Higgs field. The spinon coupling term of the action favors AF long-range order, whereas the holon hopping term in the ferromagnetic channel favors Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of holons. We investigate the phase structure by means of Monte-Carlo simulations and study an interplay of AF order and BEC of holes. We consider the two variations of the model; (i) the three-dimensional model at finite temperatures, and (ii) the two-dimensional model at vanishing temperature. In the model (i) we find that the AF order and BEC coexist at low temperatures and certain hole concentrations. In the model (ii), by varying the hole concentration and the stiffness of AF spin coupling, we find a phase diagram similar to the model (i). Implications of the results to systems of cold atoms and the fermionic $t$-$J$ model of strongly-correlated electrons are discussed.
