Effect of pump depletion on superradiance in Raman scattering of light

Abstract

An analysis is made of superradiance under Raman light scattering conditions (SRRS) allowing for pump depletion in the single-mode approximation. An investigation is made of the population difference kinetics and the pulse temporal profile under SRRS conditions. It is shown that allowance for the pump depletion imposes an additional constraint on the observation of SRRS, i.e., an upper limit of ~10 19 cm –3 for the density of the medium. It it is noted that as a result, observation of SRRS is more likely in gaseous media.

Quantum Statistics of Stimulated Raman and Hyper-Raman Scattering of Squeezed Light with Pump Depletion

Jan Peřina, J. Křepelka

Using the approximation of small fluctuations around a stationary solution, photon statistics and quadrature variances are derived in stimulated Raman and hyper-Raman scattering including the coupling of pumping, Stokes, anti-Stokes and phonon modes. The depletion of pump light is included. Compared to Raman scattering, additional regimes to generate anti-bunched, sub-Poisson and squeezed light were found caused by self-interaction of the pump mode. It was possible to include effects of nonlinear dynamics, initial squeezing of radiation and phonon system, external noise and losses.

Effects of ground-state depletion of atoms in stimulated Raman scattering of metal vapors

Yunsheng Huo, Qihong Lou, Zian Ding +1 more

The effects of ground state depletion of atoms on the characteristics of stimulated Raman scattering in metal vapors are studied by simultaniously solving the rate-equation of the atom energy levels related in the Raman scattering, and the equations describing the energy-conversion from the focused pump laser pulses to the Raman down-converted pulses. The ground state of metal atoms are depleted most strongly in the regions near the focal spots of the pump beams because of the higher intensities of light and smaller available medium volume in thosa regions. This will result in the unsymmetrical shapes of the Raman-shifted pulses for the front and rear edges, and will reduce the energy-conversion efficiency.

Theory of transient hyper-Raman scattering in gases

Yu. P. Malakyan

A theory is developed for transient hyper-Raman scattering and four-wave parametric processes in a gaseous medium subjected to an ultrashort pump pulse field. Investigations are made of the intensity and spectrum of the infrared and ultraviolet radiation generated in a medium as a result of these processes, bearing in mind the transient properties of the pump (phase modulation, pulse profile). It is shown that the initial nonlinearity of the pump field and the parametric processes result in new effects not observed in transient stimulated Raman scattering. For a large two-photon detuning, the hyper-Raman forward scattering is suppressed because of destructive interference with stimulated parametric generation of ultraviolet radiation. The gain of the infrared and ultraviolet radiation depends on the pump pulse profile. Under exact two-photon resonance conditions in the absence of any phase modulation of the pump, infrared and ultraviolet pulses are coherently split into various subpulses and a time-dependent Autler–Townes doublet is observed in their spectrum.

A theoretical analysis is made of stimulated Raman scattering of multimode pump radiation in a dispersive active medium. Gain increments and the form of the scattered field are determined for arbitrary lengths of active medium and pump intensities.

Observation of superradiant Raman scattering in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Yutaka Yoshikawa, Toshiaki Sugiura, Yoshio Torii +1 more

We observed superradiant Raman scattering from a Bose-Einstein condensate irradiated by a single off-resonant light beam. Spontaneous mode selection of the scattered radiation turns probabilistic optical pumping into a stimulated Raman process, whereby the atoms are coherently transferred into a different hyperfine state. The population in the pumped state grew exponentially in time, demonstrating the emergence of bosonic stimulation in the optical pumping process.
