Beam splitting and entanglement: Generalized coherent states, group contraction, and the classical limit

Abstract

Recently, Markham and Vedral [Phys. Rev. A 67, 042113 (2003)] investigated the effect of beam splitting on the spin, or SU(2), coherent states for a single mode field. The spin coherent state is a binomial coherent state related to the Holstein-Primakoff realization of the su(2) Lie algebra given in terms of a set of single mode bose annihilation and creation operators. Upon beam splitting, the ordinary (or Glauber) coherent states merely split into products of ordinary coherent states with reduced amplitudes without becoming entangled, as one would expect for a classical-like field. The above authors expected the spin coherent states to go over to the ordinary coherent states in the limit of high spin, $j\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$, and thus to become product states after beam splitting. But this expectation was not confirmed through numerical calculation of the entropy which, instead of going to zero, leveled off with increasing spin. In this paper we find similar behavior for SU(1,1) coherent states of the Perelomov type for large Bargman index $k$, but also find that the Barut-Girardello SU(1,1) coherent states appear to rapidly become product states after beam splitting for increasing $k$. We explain these results by showing that, in reality, neither the spin coherent states nor the Perelomov SU(1,1) coherent states go over to ordinary coherent states in the limits of large $j$ or $k$, and that the Barut-Girardello coherent states merely go over to the vacuum in the large $k$ limit. Finally, we examine the correct limiting procedure for obtaining separable states (i.e., products of coherent states) upon beam splitting by performing contractions of the su(2) and su(1,1) Lie algebras and of their associated coherent states.

Entanglement generation from deformed spin coherent states using a beam splitter

K. Berrada, M. El Baz, Farhan Saif +2 more

Using the linear entropy as a measure of entanglement, we investigate the effect of a beam splitter on the Perelomov coherent states for the q-deformed Uq(su(2)) algebra. We distinguish two cases: in the classical q → 1 limit, we find that the states become Glauber coherent states as the spin tends to infinity; whereas for q ≠ 1, the states, contrary to the earlier case, become entangled as they pass through a beam splitter. The entanglement strongly depends on the q-deformation parameter and the amplitude Z of the state.

SU(1,1) Nonlinear Coherent States

B. Mojaveri, Alireza Dehghani

The idea of construction of the nonlinear coherent states based on the hypergeometric- type operators associated to the Weyl-Heisenberg group [J:P hys:A 45(2012) 095304], are generalized to the similar states for the arbitrary Lie group SU(1, 1). By using of a discrete, unitary and irreducible representation of the Lie algebra su(1, 1) wide range of generalized nonlinear coherent states(GNCS) have been introduced, which admit a resolution of the identity through positive definite measures on the complex plane. We have shown that realization of these states for different values of the deformation pa- rameters r = 1 and 2 lead to the well-known Klauder-Perelomov and Barut-Girardello coherent states associated to the Irreps of the Lie algebra su(1, 1), respectively. It is worth to mention that, like the canonical coherent states, GNCS possess the temporal stability property. Finally, studying some statistical characters implies that they have indeed nonclassical features such as squeezing, anti-bunching effect and sub-Poissonian statistics, too.

Entangled coherent states for systems withSU(2) andSU(1,1) symmetries

Xiao-Guang Wang, Barry C. Sanders, Shaohua Pan

Entangled SU (2) and SU (1,1) coherent states are developed as superpositions of multiparticle SU (2) and SU (1,1) coherent states. As a special example of entangled SU (2) coherent states, entangled binomial states are introduced and these entangled binomial states enable the contraction from entangled SU (2) coherent states to entangled harmonic oscillator coherent states. Entangled SU (2) coherent states are discussed in the context of pairs of qubits. We also introduce the entangled negative binomial states and entangled squeezed states as examples of entangled SU (1,1) coherent states. A method for generating the entangled SU (2) and SU (1,1) coherent states is discussed and degrees of entanglement calculated. Two types of SU (1,1) coherent states are discussed in each case: Perelomov coherent states and Barut-Girardello coherent states.

The overlap of generalized coherent states of any rank one simple Lie algebra and its classical limit

Nicola Pranzini

Abstract We provide a formula for computing the overlap between two generalized coherent states of any rank one simple Lie algebra. Then, we apply our formula to spin coherent states (i.e. su ( 2 ) algebra), pseudo-spin coherent states (i.e. su ( 1 , 1 ) algebra), and the sl ( 2 , R ) subalgebras of Virasoro. In all these examples, we show the emergence of a semi-classical behavior from the set of coherent states and verify that it always happens when some parameter, depending on the algebra and its representation, becomes large.

Coherent states associated with the continuous spectrum of noncompact groups

M. Hongoh

A new, explicit formula is obtained for the coherent states associated with a continuous spectrum of the noncompact group SU(1,1). The method is based on a simple and unified algebraic approach. We briefly discuss its relations to the generalized coherent states of Barut and Girardello, and of Perelomov.

SU(1,1) parity and strong violations of a Bell inequality by entangled Barut–Girardello coherent states

Edwin E. Hach, Richard J. Birrittella, Paul M. Alsing +1 more

We study the violations of the Bell–Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt inequality for entangled SU(1,1) Barut–Girardello coherent states. As in a previous paper where violations of the inequality were studied for entangled SU(1,1) coherent states of the Perelomov form [Phys. Rev. A.93, 042104 (2016)PLRAAN1050-294710.1103/PhysRevA.93.042104], we choose as our observable the SU(1,1) parity operator, though here we discuss the physical meaning of the operator for single-mode and two-mode bosonic realizations of the su(1,1) Lie algebra. We show that the SU(1,1) parity operator is not the same as the usual photon number parity operator but rather is a form of higher-order photon number parity. Distant observers Alice and Bob perform on each of their subsystems non-compact SU(1,1) transformations characterized by hyperbolic angles, followed by measurements of the SU(1,1) parity operators. We find strong violations of the inequality over a wide range of parameters, and these violations are stronger than those that can be obtained by the entangled Perelomov SU(1,1) coherent state.
