Abstract

Polarization-dependent photon switch is one of the most important ingredients in building future large-scale all-optical quantum network. We present a scheme for a single-photon switch in a one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide, where N(a) Λ-type three-level atoms are individually embedded in each of the resonator. By tuning the interaction between atom and field, we show that an initial incident photon with a certain polarization can be transformed into its orthogonal polarization state. Finally, we use the fidelity as a figure of merit and numerically evaluate the performance of our photon switch scheme in varieties of system parameters, such as number of atoms, energy detuning and dipole couplings.

Resonator mediated controlling single photon transport in one-dimensional waveguide coupling to a giant atom

Guoqing Cai, Yunning Lu, Zhao Liu +2 more

We theoretically investigate coherent controlling single photon transport in one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a giant atom interacting with a resonator. The giant atom is considered as a Λ-type system. One transition of the atom couples to the waveguide and the other one is driven by the resonator. Single photon scattering amplitudes are calculated for three kinds of coupling schematics, respectively. Both the analytical and numerical results show that single photon scattering properties can be manipulated by adjusting the size of the giant atom, the coupling strengths of the waveguide-resonator and resonator-giant atom. Specifically, the transmission spectra exhibit two Rabi-splitting dips and the locations of the dips are strongly dependent on the size of the giant atom (GA). It also shows that the resonant single photon can be tuned from being transmitted to being reflected by controlling the coupling strength. Our results may find applications in designing quantum devices based on giant atom at single-photon level.

Single-photon scattering on Λ -type three-level atoms in a one-dimensional waveguide

T. S. Tsoi, C. K. Law

We investigate the quantum scattering involving a single photon and a chain of $N$ polarized $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type three-level atoms inside a one-dimensional waveguide. By using a transfer matrix method, we obtain analytic expressions of eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian, which determine the polarization dependent transmission and reflection spectra for a single photon. We show that the scattering is most significant when the interatomic distance equals an integer multiple plus a quarter of the resonance wavelength. In such a configuration, an incident photon with an unknown polarization can be converted into a specified polarization with a transmission probability higher than that in polarizers obeying Malus's law.

Controllable Optical Switch in a One-Dimensional Resonator Waveguide Coupled to a Whispering-Gallery Resonator

Jia-Hong Lang

Single photon transport properties in a one-dimensional array of coupled microcavities waveguide coupled to a whispering-gallery resonator interacting with a Λ-type system are theoretically investigated. The calculations reveal that the transport properties of single photons with arbitrary energy can be controlled by varying the Rabi frequency and detuning the control optical field. This phenomenon can be used for controllable optical switching.

Single microwave photon switch controlled by an external electrostatic field

Qian Jiang, Qingmei Hu, Bingsuo Zou +1 more

We design a single microwave photon switch through a one-dimensional waveguide coupled with a side Jaynes-Cummings system, namely, a single-mode cavity with an embedded Rydberg atom $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$. Since the energy spectra of the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atom depend on the electrostatic field, the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atom can couple with the cavity in tune and out of tune, corresponding to the switch on and off states, respectively. The influences of the single photon pulse width, cavity dissipation, and Rabi coupling on the on/off ratio are studied in detail by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. We find that the on/off ratio can be larger than 100 in a wide parameter space and the decay time and rise time are both about 0.75 ns. Within the master equation of the density matrix we also demonstrate that the on/off ratio can be reduced by the quantum noise but is still large enough for application. The transition energy of the two-level Rydberg atom $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ gives the switch operating frequency which is in the range of microwave regime. Accordingly, the switch is viable in practice and has potential in quantum informatics.

Tunable single-photon quantum router

M. Ahumada, P. A. Orellana, Francisco Domínguez-Adame +1 more

We propose an efficient single-photon router comprising two resonator waveguide channels coupled by several sequential cavities with embedded three-level atoms. We show that the system can operate as a perfect four-way single-photon switch. We also demonstrate that an incident single photon propagating in one of the waveguides can be routed into one or the other output channels; such routing can be controlled by the external classical electromagnetic field driving the atoms. We argue that, under appropriate conditions, the efficiency of such routing can be close to 100% within a broad operational bandwidth, suggesting various applications in photonics.

Single-Photon Scattering by a Three-level System Interacting with a Whispering-Gallery Resonator Coupled to One-Dimensional Waveguide

Mu-Tian Cheng, Yan‐Yan Song, Yaqin Luo +1 more

We investigate theoretically the single-photon scattering by a Λ-type three-level system interacting with a whispering-gallery-type resonator which is coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide by full quantum-mechanical approach. The single-photon transmission amplitude and reflection amplitude are obtained exactly via real-space approach. The single-photon transport properties controlling by classic optical field are discussed. The critical coupling condition in the coupled waveguide-whispering-gallery resonator-atom with three-level system is also analyzed.
