Abstract

We report on the experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in V and Λ energy level schemes using counterpropagating coupling and probe beam geometry. The observation was achieved using an acetylene photonic microcell. The conditions required for this observation are explored theoretically, and we show that the use of counterpropagating beams in electromagnetically induced transparency may have applications as a spectroscopic technique where velocity discrimination is desirable.

We report detailed experimental and theoretical results comparing electromagnetically- induced-transparency obtained in V and Lambda configurations in acetylene-filled-hollow-core PCF. For the same experimental conditions, the EIT in V-scheme shows a stronger peak but larger linewidth.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in an open V-type molecular system

We report the experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an inhomogeneously broadened V-type Na${}_{2}$ molecular system. The experiment is performed with both co- and counterpropagating arrangements for the propagation directions of the coupling and probe laser beams. In our theoretical model we employ the density matrix formalism, as well as perturbative methods for obtaining the probe field absorption profile for both open and closed systems. Simulations of the experimental data show excellent agreement with the predictions derived from the basic theory. Our fluorescent intensity measurements show that, in the copropagating configuration, the EIT plus saturation window depth is about $95%$, while under similar conditions in the counterpropagating geometry we observed $40%$--$45%$ reduction in the fluorescence signal around the line center. To separate the two simultaneously occurring mechanisms in a V-type system (i.e., EIT and saturation) that are induced by the coupling field, we have carried out theoretical calculations which show that, in the copropagating case, a significant fraction of the depth of the dip is due to the coherent effect of EIT. When the coupling and probe beams are in the counterpropagating configuration, the dip is mostly due to saturation effects alone.

Electromagnetically-induced transparency grid in acetylene-filled hollow-core PCF

We report a set of experimental observations on electromagnetically induced transparency in acetylene filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, involving both Lambda-type and V-type interactions over several lines of the R-branch of the nu1 + nu3 ro-vibrational overtone band. Transparency as high as ~70% was achieved. A theoretical account of the sources of decoherence shows that collisions with the inner wall of the fiber core and laser frequency-jitter dominate the coherence decay.

Experimental Demonstration of Electromagnetic Induced Transparency and Dispersion Effects in Cs Atom Vapour

Junxiang Zhang, Ruifang Dong, Hong Chang +3 more

The effects of the electromagnetically induced transparency and dispersion of a Λ-type three-level atomic system are experimentally measured with a vapour cell of Cs atoms. The steep dispersion at low absorption is observed. Thus a small group velocity for the probe beam is inferred from the measured dispersion curve.
