Spontaneous emission from a two-level atom in anisotropic one-band photonic crystals: A fractional calculus approach

Jing-Nuo Wu, Chih‐Hsien Huang, Szu-Cheng Cheng +1 more

Spontaneous emission (SE) from a two-level atom in an anisotropic photonic crystal (PC) is investigated by the fractional calculus. Physical phenomena of the SE are studied analytically by solving the fractional kinetic equations of the SE. There is a dynamical discrepancy between the SE of anisotropic and isotropic PCs. We find that, contrary to the SE phenomenon of the isotropic PC, the SE near the band edge of an anisotropic PC shows no photon-atom bound state. It is consistent with the experimental results of Barth, Schuster, Gruber, and Cichos [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 243902 (2006)] that the anisotropic property of the system enhances the SE. We also study effects of dispersion curvatures on the changes of the photonic density of states and the appearance of the diffusion fields in the SE.

Two-photon correlated–spontaneous-emission laser: Quantum noise quenching and squeezing

Marlan O. Scully, K. Wódkiewicz, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy +3 more

Previous studies have shown that the possible utility of the two-photon laser as a squeezed-state generator is negated by spontaneous-emission fluctuations. We here show that a two-photon correlated--spontaneous-emission laser can produce light which is both squeezed and free from spontaneous-emission fluctuations.

Spontaneous Emission Decay and Excitation in Photonic Time Crystals

Jagang Park, Kyungmin Lee, Ruo-Yang Zhang +10 more

Over the last few decades, the predominant strategies for controlling spontaneous emission have involved tailoring the spatial surroundings of quantum emitters or atoms to create resonant or spatially periodic photonic structures. However, the rise of time-varying photonics has prompted a reevaluation of spontaneous emission in dynamically changing environments, especially within photonic time crystals, where optical properties undergo time-periodic modulation. Here, we apply classical light-matter interaction theory together with Floquet analysis to reveal a substantial enhancement of the spontaneous emission decay rate at the momentum gap frequency in photonic time crystals. Moreover, our findings suggest that photonic time crystals enable a nonequilibrium light-matter interaction process: the spontaneous excitation of an atom from its ground state to an excited state, accompanied by the concurrent emission of a photon, referred to as spontaneous emission excitation.
