Coherent control and third-harmonic generation: an experimental study

Stefano Cavalieri, Lorenzo Fini, Roberto Buffa

The effect of temporal coherent control on the two-photon resonant third-harmonic generation in the continuum of ionization of an atomic system is experimentally investigated by means of a pair of partially incoherent, identical laser pulses. The evidence of quantum interference in the third-harmonic generation, as a function of delay between pulses, is reported. The transition from a resonant to a nonresonant case is also shown. The results agree with the predictions of a recently published theoretical model showing that the onset of quantum interference appears to be related to the coherence time of the laser radiation that is much shorter than the pulse duration.

Coherent control of third-harmonic generation and multiphoton ionization: Experimental and theoretical studies

Roberto Buffa, R. Eramo, CAVALIERI, STEFANO +1 more

The effect of temporal coherent control on the two-photon-resonant third-harmonic generation and multiphoton ionization into the continuum states of an atomic system is experimentally and theoretically investigated by means of a pair of partially incoherent, identical laser pulses. The evidence of quantum interference as a function of the delay between the pulses is reported. The transition from the resonant to the nonresonant case is also shown. The obtained results agree with the prediction of a theoretical model showing that the onset of quantum interference appears to be related to the coherence time of the laser radiation, which is much shorter than the pulse duration.

Two Photon Absorption and Coherent Control with Broadband Down-Converted Light

Barak Dayan, Avi Pe’er, Asher A. Friesem +1 more

We experimentally demonstrate two-photon absorption with broadband down-converted light (squeezed vacuum). Although incoherent and exhibiting the statistics of a thermal noise, broadband down-converted light can induce two-photon absorption with the same sharp temporal behavior as femtosecond pulses, while exhibiting the high spectral resolution of the narrow band pump laser. Using pulse-shaping methods, we coherently control two-photon absorption in rubidium, demonstrating spectral and temporal resolutions that are 3-5 orders of magnitude below the actual bandwidth and temporal duration of the light itself. Such properties can be exploited in various applications such as spread-spectrum optical communications, tomography, and nonlinear microscopy.
