Abstract

A review is given of recent investigations, both theoretical and experimental, that demonstrate the new phenomena in photoionization of atoms by strong laser light. The essential problems concerning autoionization, ionization by smooth laser pulses, above threshold ionization and near threshold ionization are summarized.

Atomic Photoionization In Intense Optical Fields

P H. Buchsbaum

Intense light fields can induce elastic and inelastic electron scattering, as well as above-threshold ionization in atoms. This paper reviews some recent atomic photoionization experiments that demonstrate the connection between these new effects and the quantum mechanics of wiggling electrons.

Short-pulse photoionization of perturbed Rydberg states: Laser-induced autoionization

Rutger B. Vrijen, J. H. Hoogenraad, Lambertus D. Noordam

Laser-induced autoionization, a form of forced autoionization, is discussed. Highly excited atomic Rydberg states generally have a small cross section for photoionization due to their small overlap with the nucleus. The cross section for photoionization can be strongly enhanced if the Rydberg series is perturbed by an atomic state with a relatively large cross section for photoionization. The photoionization dynamics of such a perturbed Rydberg system shows strong similarities to that of an autoionizing Rydberg series. For intense laser pulses, which strongly couple the perturber to the continuum, the photoionization rate is limited by the coupling between the Rydberg states and the perturber or, in other words, the autoionization rate. The model describing this ionization dynamics is applied to the barium 6snd${(}^{1,3}$${\mathit{D}}_{2}$) state which is perturbed by the 5d7d${(}^{1}$${\mathit{D}}_{2}$) state. The calculations show good agreement with experimental results of photoionization of barium Rydberg states with subpicosecond laser pulses of light of 620 nm in wavelength.

STRONG-FIELD AUTOIONIZATION BY SQUARE LASER PULSES

CHEN RONG-QING, Zhizhan Xu, SUN LAN +4 more

Previous studies on strong-field autoionization involving high-order ionization processes are mainly investigated for the cases of CW laser irradiations. This paper extends those studies to the cases of square laser pulses with arbitrary widths. Populations of the ground state and the line shapes of the autoionizing resonance are discussed. It is shown that strong-field autoionization and the high-order ionization processes are drastically affected not only by the intensities but also by the time of interaction between atoms and laser field.

Atomic and Free Electrons in a Strong Light Field

This book presents and describes a series of unusual and striking strong-field phenomena concerning atoms and free electrons. Some of these phenomena are: multiphoton stimulated bremsstrahlung, free-electron lasers, wave-packet physics, above-threshold ionization, and strong-field stabilization in Rydberg atoms. The theoretical foundations and causes of the phenomena are described in detail, with all the approximations and derivations discussed. All the known and relevant experiments are described too, and their results are compared with those of the existing theoretical models. An extensive ge

New effects in the multiphoton ionization of atoms

Nikolai B. Delone, Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

The review is devoted to new effects discovered recently in the course of studying the process of nonlinear ionization of atoms in the field of laser radiation—above-threshold ionization, manifestation of multielectron structure of complex atoms, formation of multiply charged ions, tunneling ionization, and emission of short-wavelength radiation. The main experimental data and their theoretical interpretation are presented. A discussion is given of the criteria for the applicability of the lowest non-vanishing order of non-steady-state perturbation theory to the description of the interaction of an atom with the electromagnetic field.
