Electromagnetically induced absorption with sub-kHz spectral width in a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell

Abstract

We report on electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) with sub-kHz spectral width in a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell in the Hanle configuration of the 5S(1/2)(F=2)-5P(3/2)(F'=3) transition of 87Rb atoms. Using a linearly polarized laser, the spectral width of the Hanle EIA spectrum was measured to be 0.55 mG (390 Hz). The narrow spectral width was due to the maintaining of atomic coherence between ground states while atoms collided with the anti-relaxation coated wall of the Rb vapor cell. Under a weak transverse residual magnetic field, the angle between the transverse residual magnetic field and the direction of linear polarization affected the magnitude of the narrow Hanle EIA spectrum. This is because of the change of atomic magnetic momentum due to the weak transverse residual magnetic field around the zero value of the longitudinal magnetic field.

Magnetic-field-induced absorption with sub-milligauss spectral width in paraffin-coated rubidium vapor cell

Hyun Joon Lee, Han Seb Moon

We investigated the switching between the transmittance and absorption of the 5S1/2(F=2)→5P1/2(F′=1) transition of Rb87 in a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell in the Hanle configuration. When the laser polarization was changed from linear to circular, the coherent population trapping (CPT) spectrum, with a spectral width of 0.12 mG due to the Ramsey effect, transformed into a narrow absorption spectrum with a sub-milligauss spectral width of 0.2 mG. The CPT and narrow absorption spectra were numerically calculated for both polarizations by considering the degenerate magnetic sublevels of the 5S1/2–5P1/2 transition in the antirelaxation-coated atomic vapor cell. This narrow absorption spectrum was revealed to be magnetic-field-induced absorption due to the residual transverse magnetic field and preservation time of the ground-state coherent spin states.

Transformation of Ramsey electromagnetically induced absorption into magnetic-field induced transparency in a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell

Han Seb Moon, Ho-Jung Kim

We report on magnetic-field induced transparency (MIT) based on Ramsey electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell. Changing the laser polarization from linear to circular in the presence of a weak residual transverse magnetic field to the laser propagation, the narrow absorption due to the Ramsey EIA transformed into the transparency due to MIT of the 5S1/2 (F = 2)-5P3/2 (F' = 3) transition of 87Rb in the paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell. The spectral widths of the EIA and MIT in the Hanle configuration were measured to be 0.6 mG (425 Hz) and 1.2 mG, respectively. MIT depended on the long preservation time of the ground-state coherent spin states and the transverse magnetic field. From the numerical results, the crossover between the Ramsey EIA and the MIT could be illustrated as the superposition of both signals.

Electromagnetically induced absorption resonances in Hanle-configuration prepared in a paraffin coated 87Rb cell

Abstract We present an experimental investigation of electromagnetically-induced absorption (EIA) at the D1 line of 87Rb contained in an anti-relaxation coated vacuum optical cell. The configuration includes a pump and a probe beam propagating in opposite directions and having mutually orthogonal linear polarizations; the probe beam absorption is registered depending on the value of a magnetic field scanned around zero and applied collinearly to the laser beams. The advantages of this scheme have been recently evidenced in vapor cells filled with a buffer gas. In the present work we studied the width and the contrast of the EIA resonances obtained in a coated cell for different values of the pump power. The results are compared with those obtained in a buffer gas cell for the same transition of 87Rb. The theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experiment.

Spatial transport of atomic coherence in electromagnetically induced absorption with a paraffin-coated Rb vapor cell

Yoon‐Seok Lee, Han Seb Moon

We report the spatial transport of spontaneously transferred atomic coherence (STAC) in electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA), which resulted from moving atoms with the STAC of the 5S(1/2) (F = 2)-5P(3/2) (F' = 3) transition of (87)Rb in a paraffin-coated vapor cell. In our experiment, two channels were spatially separate; the writing channel (WC) generated STAC in the EIA configuration, and the reading channel (RC) retrieved the optical field from the spatially transported STAC. Transported between the spatially separated positions, the fast light pulse of EIA in the WC and the delayed light pulse in the RC were observed. When the laser direction of the RC was counter-propagated in the direction of the WC, we observed direction reversal of the transported light pulse in the EIA medium. Furthermore, the delay time, the magnitude, and the width of the spatially transported light pulse were investigated with respect to the distance between the two channels.

Dual-beam electromagnetically-induced absorption resonance in a 87Rb cell with antirelaxation coating

Elena T. Taskova, Emilia A. Alipieva

Abstract Destruction of the laser-induced coherence in the ground state of alkali atoms manifests itself as an ultra-narrow resonance in the atomic spectrum. Depending on the geometry of irradiation and observation, the coherent spectroscopy studies CPT (coherent population trapping), EIT (electromagnetically-induced transparency) or EIA (electromagnetically-induced absorption). In the present work, we investigated EIA on the D1 87Rb line by applying a counter-propagating dual-beam scheme. The main advantage of this scheme is the high resonance contrast – an important parameter for many applications. In our previous work performed in a paraffin-coated cell we observed that, unlike the resonance in buffer gas cell detected in the same experimental scheme, the EIA signal has a complex form, because it is formed by two atomic sub-ensembles in the vapor cell with different relaxation rates determined by the laser excitation conditions. We focused on the narrow component, since it has a higher amplitude-width ratio, making it preferable for applications. We investigate the influence of the atomic vapor density and the pump laser intensity on the resonance parameters in order to optimize the amplitude ratio of the wide and narrow components and achieve the highest amplitude-width ratio value for the narrow component of the EIA resonance.

Level-crossing absorption with narrow spectral width in Rb vapor with buffer gas

Ye-Jin Yu, Hyun Joon Lee, In‐Ho Bae +2 more

We present the transformation in the Hanle configuration of the transmission that results from coherent population trapping (CPT) into the level-crossing absorption (LCA) that results from the single-photon optical pumping in the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ ${D}_{1}$ line of a Rb vapor cell with a Ne buffer gas when the polarization of the laser field is changed from linear to circular. The LCA spectrum, with a narrow spectral width of $2.4$ mG ($1.7$ kHz), was observed in the ${F}_{g}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{F}_{e}\ensuremath{\leqslant}{F}_{g}$ transition with the circularly polarized laser. This may be because the LCA is both related to the transverse magnetic field and the atom-laser interaction time resulting from diffusive atomic motion in the cell with the buffer gas. The CPT and LCA spectra were calculated numerically using the full density matrix equations for the relevant magnetic sublevels of the hyperfine levels, considering the residual magnetic fields perpendicular to laser propagation and the collision effects resulting from the buffer gas. There was good qualitative agreement between theoretical and experimental results.
