Dynamics of an atomic system in a strong non-classical electromagnetic field

Abstract

The dynamics of an atom in a strong single mode non-classical electromagnetic cavity field is studied. The reconstruction of the energy spectrum of an atom and the effect of ionization suppression in the presence of a non-classical field are discussed. It is found that a mechanism of ionization suppression similar to the Kramers–Henneberger one is also realized in strong non-classical fields. For squeezed vacuum states the threshold of the stabilization is approximately three times lower than for a classical (coherent) state of the same intensity.

AC stark effect and atomic stabilization in a strong nonclassical electromagnetic field

Anna V. Bogatskaya, A. M. Popov

We consider the dynamics of an atom that interacts with one mode of an electromagnetic field in a microcavity. We discuss the reconstruction of the spectrum of atomic states and the occurrence of a stabilization effect for the case of a nonclassical state of the field mode, in particular, a squeezed vacuum state. We show that, for nonclassical fields, an ionization-suppression effect also arises (stabilization), which is similar to the Kramers-Henneberger stabilization in a classical electromagnetic field, and, for squeezed states of the electromagnetic field, the stabilization threshold is several times smaller than that for the classical electro-magnetic field of the same intensity.

Ionization of a model quantum system by a single mode electromagnetic cavity field

Olga V. Tikhonova, A. M. Popov

The ionization of a model atom in a strong single-mode non-classical electromagnetic field is studied beyond the perturbation approach using the model of ``one discrete level + continuum'' for the atom. Explicit analytical expressions for the time-dependent probability of atomic ionization are obtained for different initial states of radiative field: Fock state, coherent wave packet, squeezed vacuum state. The results are compared to the ionization decay of discrete atomic level in a classical light field, and are analyzed for different mean number of radiative photons. The time-dependent distribution of the quantized field over photon number states is examined.

Spontaneous emission from the atom stabilized by a strong high-frequency laser field

Anna V. Bogatskaya, Ekaterina A. Volkova, A. M. Popov

Abstract The spontaneous emission of a quantum system driven by a high-intensity, high-frequency classical laser field is analyzed. The study is based on the accurate consideration of the quantum system interacting with vacuum-quantized field modes in the first order of perturbation theory, while the intense laser field is considered classically beyond this theory. It is demonstrated that the spectrum of the spontaneous emission can be used for analyzing the strong-field dynamics and the structure of the energy spectrum of an atomic system. In particular, it is found that in high-frequency fields (where the energy of the laser quanta is greater than the ionization potential) atoms manifest the features of the Kramers–Henneberger atom. It is also found that in the stabilization regime, the atom emits both odd and even laser radiation harmonics.

Ionization of a two-electron atom in a strong electromagnetic field

O. V. Ovodova, A. M. Popov, Olga V. Tikhonova

A one-dimensional model of a helium atom in an intense field of a femtosecond electromagnetic pulse has been constructed using the Hartree technique. “Exact” calculations have been compared to the approximations of “frozen” and “passive” electrons. A nonmonotonic dependence of the single-electron ionization probability on the radiation intensity has been detected. Minima in the ionization probability are due to multiphoton resonances between different atomic states due to the dynamic Stark effect. We suggest that the ionization suppression is due to the interference stabilization in this case.

The ionization of atoms in an intense nonclassical electromagnetic field

A. M. Popov, Olga V. Tikhonova

The ionization of atoms in a strong nonclassical unimodal electromagnetic field was considered. It was shown that the probability of ionization could substantially change depending on the quantum state of the field even at a constant mean number of quanta in the radiation mode. The difference of ionization rates was especially large for multiphoton ionization processes. It was, in particular, shown that a nonclassical field could be much more effective from the point of view of the ionization of atoms than a classical field of the same intensity. The characteristics of the decay of a bound atomic system state in a strong nonclassical field were studied without invoking perturbation theory.
