Stochastic simulations of quantum optical systems

Abstract

The stochastic simulations of quantum evolution are introduced, alternatively to the Ito-stochastic simulations, for the normal, symmetrical and antinormal ordering in the double dimensional phase-space. The nonclassical effects in the linearized parametric amplifier can be very well simulated in contrast to the collapses-revivals effect in the nonlinear version of amplifier. It is illustrated that the stochastic simulation method using the continuous variables cannot be used if the discreteness of light has pronounced influence on the dynamics.

Stochastic simulations: continuous approximation of quantum noise

Radim Filip

The stochastic simulations of quantum evolution are introduced, alternatively, to the Ito-stochastic simulations, for the normal, symmetrical and antinormal ordering in the double-dimensional phase space. The nonclassical effects in the linearized parametric amplifier can be very well simulated in contrast to the collapses-revivals effect in a nonlinear version, which is stimulated by the discreteness of light. The reason is that the stochastic simulations use the continuous variables, whereas the quantum noise in nonlinear systems cannot generally be treated continuously.

Stochastic Simulations and Discreteness of Light

Radim Filip

The disability of stochastic simulations of a quantum system using continuous variables to describe the discreteness of light is illustrated on the example of the nonlinear interaction. In this case, the well-known occurrence of divergent trajectories in the simulations is suppressed and correct results can be achieved only if the discrete character is artificially implemented into the simulation process.

Nonlinear quantum-stochastic model for the parameteric oscillator

Murray Wolinsky, H. J. Carmichael

The positive Prepresentation has proved a useful tool for analyzing optical systems which exhibit squeezing. The Glauber-Sudarshan phase-space representation gives a Fokker-Planck equation without positive semidefinite diffusion for systems which generate nonclassical fields. The positive Prepresentation provides a method for guaranteeing positive semidefinite diffusion and enables a quantum- dynamical model to be formulated in terms of classical stochastic differential equations. In previous work we had some success in applying this approach to describe the decay of the unstable state above threshold in a degenerate parametric oscillator.1 Below threshold a linearized analysis of fluctuations recovers the predictions of squeezing obtained by alternative methods.

Beyond the Fokker-Planck equation: Stochastic simulation of complete Wigner representation for the optical parametric oscillator

L. I Plimak, M. K. Olsen, M Fleischhauer +1 more

We demonstrate a method which allows the stochastic modelling of quantum systems for which the generalised Fokker-Planck equation in the phase space contains derivatives of higher than second order. This generalises quantum stochastics far beyond the quantum-optical paradigm of three- and four-wave mixing problems to which these techniques have so far only been applicable. To verify our method, we model a full Wigner representation for the optical parametric oscillator, a system where the correct results are well known and can be obtained by other methods.

Quantum properties of kerr nonlinear directional couplers via phase-space representation / Rafael Julius

Rafael Julius

Quantum statistical properties of interacting optical fields in Kerr nonlinear couplers may be regarded as one of the most fundamental problems yet to be solved in quantum optics. As an analytical solution to this system is not always possible, a semi-analytic or direct numerical solution must be employed in order to obtain a more complete description of their evolution. This study investigates the quantum properties of four-mode couplers composed of two and four Kerr nonlinear waveguides, both with and without cavity set up via phase space representation. In these systems, the electromagnetic fields are described by their Hamiltonians, while the time-evolution of the systems are described by the Von-Neumann equation. Following standard techniques, the master equations for the density matrices of the systems are obtained and further converted to the corresponding classical Fokker- Planck equations using both positive P and Wigner representations. The corresponding set of Langevin Stochastic equations is then obtained from the Fokker-Planck equations by means of Ito rules. Finally, the systems are integrated numerically and averaged over many trajectories to get the relevant information. The effects of self-action nonlinearity, cross-action coupling and the initial energy of the coherent light on the evolution of the field quadrature variances are investigated. Furthermore, the influences of multimode interaction on the dynamics of the squeezed states are discussed. In this research, we show that the system may produce squeezed states in both quadrature variances for all calculated parameters. The multimode two channel model can provide better squeezing in contrast to the conventional device. The amplitude oscillation of maximal squeezing may be amplified by manipulation of the initial state of the coherent light in the first mode, and the range may be extended through multimode interaction. When the model is contained in a cavity, the system is able to generate better amplitude oscillations and squeezing range with leaf-revival-collapse-like behaviour; with the whole oscillation able to evolute below the standard quantum limit Regular photon transition and self trapping effects of the interacting modes in the four channels model are simulated, and squeezing is predicted for various initial intensities of the coherent field and nonlinear coupling parameter g. The cavity setup caused the system to undergo fluctuation amplification and the potential for different types of squeezing to be generated is observed. Depending on how we choose the interaction parameter values, the system may generate better squeezing in comparison to the cavity-less model.

Stimulated Raman scattering with initially nonclassical light

Jan Peřina

Nonclassical light is now available in a number oflaboratories, being generated by Frank—Hertz experiment, optical parametric processes, four-wave mixing including optical fibres, by optical system with feedback, etc. Therefore it is senseful to reconsider various nonlinear optical interactions involving initially nonclassical light ,originally solved with coherent (laser) light. Adopting tools of quasidistributions related to antinormal ordering, the photocount distributions, its factorial moments and characteristics of squeezing of vacuum fluctuations can be investigated assuming initially nonclassical (squeezed) light in the framework of the Heisenberg—Langevin of Schrödinger approaches. Photon statistics of stimulated Raman scattering of squeezed light can be derived assuming phonon system in chaotic, coherent or squeezed states and including additive noise. The influence of nonlinear dynamics can be established on initially inclassical light and it can be shown that the initially nonclassical effects are encresed by the nonlinear dynamics provided that the Stokes mode is less amplified than the anti-Stokes mode is damped, whereas in the opposite case the nonclassical features are smoothed out. Also frequency detuning can be optimized to have maximum nonclassical effects, which are missing with increasing phonon number, even if the phonon system is squeezed. Small initial squeezing can by increased by the nonlinear dynamics, whereas strong squeezing can only be diminished.
