Thermodynamic Property of theΔ-Chain

Abstract

A one-dimensional fully frustrated quantum spin system called the Δ -chain is investigated, particularly with respect to the low-temperature structure of the specific heat, by quantum Monte Carlo simulations using the restructuring method. Sizes of the systems we considered are N =32,48 and 64. The simulation results together with the diagonalization results for N =10 and 16 show that the size dependence of the data is very weak, and thus the second peak of the specific heat stably exists at T <0.1, which corresponds to less than half the spin gap. Locality of excitations is seen in the Monte Carlo snapshot. We consider that the low-temperature properties of this system are governed by the local elementary excitations which generate the Schottky-type specific heat peak in the background of the ordinary thermal specific heat.

Thermodynamic Properties ofS=1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains

Seiji Miyashita, Shoji Yamamoto

Thermodynamic properties of S =1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with free and periodic boundaries are investigated by means of a quantum Monte Carlo method. The specific heat is shown to have a peak at a temperature T peak ∼2Δ, where Δ is the energy gap of the present model, although global shape of the temperature dependence is very similar to the Schottky type specific heat. In open chains, due to the four-fold degeneracy of the ground state, the magnetic susceptibility shows a Curie-like divergence regardless of the number of spins. The extracted diverging part is consistent with the edge moment S =1/2.

Thermodynamic properties of the Δ-chain model in a uniform magnetic field

Hiromi Otsuka

A numerical approach for calculating an eigenvalue distribution function is developed and it is applied to the study on a fully frustrated spin system called the \ensuremath{\Delta}-chain model. We examine the magnetic-field dependence of the specific heat to clarify the relationship between the highly frustrated spins and the lower-temperature peak which has been extensively investigated by Kubo. Our numerical data show that with the increase of magnetic field, the peak width becomes broader and the height lower. This sensitive dependence should be caused by lowering the high degeneracy of states contributing to the peak formation. On the other hand, we also find that the higher-temperature peak observed commonly in antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains is almost unchanged.

Excited states and the thermodynamics of a fully frustrated quantum spin chain

Kenn Kubo

A one-dimensional fully frustrated spin system called a \ensuremath{\Delta} chain is considered and its excited states and the specific heat are investigated. As in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome$iaa--- lattice, the classical ground state of the system has infinite continuous degeneracies. Numerical studies of finite systems show that the low-lying excited states have an almost dispersionless spectrum near a small energy gap. As a result the specific heat exhibits a two-peak structure, one of which arises from these low-lying excited states.

Thermodynamic properties of highly frustrated quantum spin ladders: Influence of many-particle bound states

A. Honecker, Stefan Weßel, René John Kerkdyk +3 more

Quantum antiferromagnets have proven to be some of the cleanest realizations available for theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies of quantum fluctuation effects. At finite temperatures, however, the additional effects of thermal fluctuations in the restricted phase space of a low-dimensional system have received much less attention, particularly the situation in frustrated quantum magnets, where the excitations may be complex collective (bound or even fractionalized) modes. We investigate this problem by studying the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated two-leg $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spin ladder, with particular emphasis on the fully frustrated case. We present numerical results for the magnetic specific heat and susceptibility, obtained from exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo studies, which we show can be rendered free of the sign problem even in a strongly frustrated system and which allow us to reach unprecedented sizes of $L=200$ ladder rungs. We find that frustration effects cause an unconventional evolution of the thermodynamic response across the full parameter regime of the model. However, close to the first-order transition they cause a highly anomalous reduction in temperature scales with no concomitant changes in the gap; the specific heat shows a very narrow peak at very low energies and the susceptibility rises abruptly at extremely low temperatures. Unusually, the two quantities have different gaps over an extended region of the parameter space. We demonstrate that these results reflect the presence of large numbers of multiparticle bound-state excitations, whose energies fall below the one-triplon gap in the transition region.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Transverse-Crystal-Field Ising Model on a Chain: -- Three Peak Structure in the Specific Heat --

Y. Fukumoto, Akihide Oguchi

The specific heat of the S = 1 transverse-crystal-field Ising model with an antiferro-magnetic exchange interaction J on a ∆-chain is studied by using the exact-diagonalization, quantum Monte Carlo and finite-temperature Lanczos methods. We find that when the strength of the transverse crystal field Γ is chosen to be sufficiently small, the specific heat exhibits a three-peak structure as a function of temperature, with peaks at T ∼ 0.05Γ, 0.2Γ and 0.7J. In addition to the two energy scales Γ and J, a new energy scale ∼ 0.1 × Γ appears due to the geometrical frustration and the existence of the Sz = 0 states in the present system. Geometrically frustrated spin systems have attracted considerable attention for a long time. It is expected that the introduction of quantum fluctuations into a clas-sically degenerate manifold leads to exotic properties of ground states and thermo-dynamics. From this point of view, S = 1/2 transverse-field Ising antiferromagnets

Thermodynamic properties ofS=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains as Haldane systems

Shoji Yamamoto, Seiji Miyashita

Thermodynamic properties of S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with free and periodic boundaries are investigated by a quantum Monte Carlo method. In particular, temperature dependences of the specific heat, the magnetic susceptibility, and the hidden order parameter, which are inherent to the Haldane phase, are investigated. The specific heat turns out to have a peak at a temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathrm{peak}}$\ensuremath{\sim}2\ensuremath{\Delta}, where \ensuremath{\Delta} is the energy gap of the present model, although the temperature dependence of the specific heat is very similar to the Schottky type. In open chains, due to the fourfold degeneracy of the ground state, the magnetic susceptibility shows a Curie-like divergence regardless of the number of spins in the chain. The amplitude of the Curie-like divergence is consistent with the edge moments (S=1/2). On the other hand, it is confirmed that the long-range hidden order exists only in the ground state. How the hidden order grows as the temperature goes to zero (T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0) is investigated by introducing an intrinsic correlation length ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\mathit{D}}$ of the ordering, which diverges as T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0. A qualitative difference in fluctuations between the ground state and the finite-temperature states is discussed making use of snapshots of the transformed two-dimensional Ising system on which a Monte Carlo simulation is being performed.
